China: Moving to Xi'An, China next year. Any helpful hints to make the move smooth.:
Hey - I am just coming in on this conversation. I currently live in Nanjing and have good friends who were in Xian till June. I do not agree with the previous post. We have Colgate toothpaste, all the other Western goodies you will want. My friends from Xian have told me they also had all they needed to access and more. We arrived with 2 suitcases and have kitted out a great apartment. Food and clothing is cheap. My husband is 6'4" and has had a suit and a cashmere coat made here for a third of the price we would have paid in US, England or Australia. Food is CHEAP. Eating out is a real treat. The Chinese will fall over backwards to try and help you. The only thing I would warn about is local tap water and make sure your insurance cover for medical is watertight and ensures you can access a doctor of your choice. Other than that embrace the move - it is fascinating, wonderful, eye opening. Forget living in the usual expat compunds and get out and live in the community with the Chinese, still in a secure environment but not with a whole lot of other foreigners. Immerse yourself in it all - it is fabulous. One of the oldest civilisations on earth - rich in culture, generous to a fault and just a wonderful experience. You don't need to bring anything with you other than your clothing and personal effects - it is another country - not another planet!
China: Searching/Advice/Opportunities:
The World Expo will be in Shanghai next year. Maybe the Portuguese will have some presence there. Perhaps you can see if they need staff for their pavillion. The government should be able to give you some leads on who to contact concerning this. Once you are here you might make some good contacts. And if you happen to be in touch with them tell them they must bring some good Fado music to Shanghai for the Expo - I love the Fado! There is no Fado in Shanghai at the moment - well I don't think there is!
China: life in macau:
I visited Macau some time ago and I have to say the Portugese Museum there is really very good.
I met a woman who is living in Macau (Aussie girl) in the Mutrah Souk in Muscat a few weeks ago and she reported that living in Macau was good and she was really enjoying it.
Sorry but I can't give you any info on jobs etc
China: living in nanjing:
I am moving to Nanjing in August when my husband takes up a position in education at the Nanjing Foreign Language School. I have so many questions and I am keen to have them answered but not sure where is the best place to go.
Firstly - where are the best places to look for accommodation? and how much would a 3 bedroom apartment/villa cost to rent? and what is the best way to source accommodation in Nanjing? We were told we could probably get a 2 bedroom for around 3000CNY ???? Is this true?
Second - we have an almost brand new car purchased very cheaply in the Middle East (UAE). We are considering bringing it in with us and packing some of our stuff in it for the move. What are the implications of importing a car to China - tax, any other costs?
We will be visiting between the 18th and 24th June to have a look around, do a handover with the current person in the job and look for accommodation. Would love to meet up with anyone who can show us the ropes!
