Venezuela: living costs and exchange rates:

I have read of extremely low costs of living in Venezuela if one is changing dollars on the black market, but that life is very expensive if one sticks to the official rate. What's the reality? With/without exchange issues,how do Venezuela costs compare with USA? With Ecuador(lowest costs I know of in S.A.)? I am specifically interested in Merida. Any expats there who'd like to exchange details?
