Brazil: Expat offers Advice on various Topics:

I travel back and forth between my homes in VA and RJ. I bought the home in RJ 2 years ago, opened a bank account, bought a car, had emergency surgery, transported my pet from/to RJ, obtained a drivers license, wired money, hired a maid, paid real estate taxes, filed a federal tax return, pay monthly utility bills, and much much more. I will try to answer your questions.

Brazil: Working in Brasil:

I am an American citizen but already own a home in RJ, have a bank account, a permanent visa, CPF, and a drivers license. I was qualified for a permanent visa under brasilian federal law because I am retired in the USA. Now I would like to work in brasil. Is this possible since my permanent visa was granted because I was retired in the USA?

Brazil: Marica:

I own property next to the city of Marica. I drive through Marica regularly. Marica is very spread out. The majority of the roads are dirt with huge holes and when it rains they are a mess to navigate. The beach is beautiful there. I looked at property there before buying but felt it was too rural for my taste.

Brazil: medical care:

I live in Niteroi. I recently had emergency gall bladder surgery and would rate their service very high. It is however quite expensive and most brasilian medical facilities do not accept any American Health Plans so you are on your own as I was to make payment using your credit card. I had to use mine to get checked into the hospital prior to the surgery. My health plan did reimburse me in the end however.

Brazil: Procedure to apply for RNE at Policia Federal after arriving to Brazil:

It took me 7 months before getting my RNE. All the paperwork goes to Brasilia where the RNE card is fabricated and then returned to the Policia Federal in your city where you made the application. If there are any spelling errors on it as was the case with my wife's RNE it took an additional 7 months to have it re-done.

Brazil: Moving to Brazil visa options:

You have 2 options. 1- marry your boyfriend in the USA, then you can get a permanent visa and live with him. 2-get a tourist visa as already posted here and be limited to 180 days a year

Brazil: Advise on schools in sao paulo:

I attended Graded for 5 years. A 5 star school. Excellent. I have friends who attended St Paul's and Chappel which are also 5 star schools.

Brazil: Move household goods to Brazil:

I moved 1 year ago. I used a company called Fastway Moving in NJ. They provided "door-to-door" service. They picked up everything in VA and delivered it to my home in RJ. Nothing was broken or nothing stolen and Fastway took care of all the bureaucratic paperwork-thankgod. They were not the cheapest mover however. Without hesitation I would use them again.

Brazil: Cost of Living:

hi kateb the answer from gustavo is misleading. to do a reasonable cost of living comparison one would need to know the city of your origin and the city of destination in brazil. for example i live within 25 miles of washington dc where the cost of living is higher than in oklahoma city ok, greensboro nc, lansing mi, or baltimore md. i googled to obtain this comparison. comparing my location with the cities of sao paulo or rio de janeiro the cost of living is almost the same, maybe as much as 15% less. note, sao paulo is a little more expensive than rio. i lived in sao paulo for 5 years and return to brasil 1 or 2 times a year to vacation and visit friends for the last 20 years. i was last there in march 2009 for 2 weeks. gustavo is correct about service providers, they are cheaper. cd's, cell phones, tv's, stoves, refrigs, clothes, shoes all cost about the same as here in the usa if you were to shop at a mall. hope this helps
