Jamaica: Moving to JA:

Hi Avie, There are several good public schools in Kingston so Private is not the only option. Check out KC( 2 of my children went there) Calabar, and Immaculate ( my other 2 children attended) I would also advise you to rent before you buy so you become comfortable with a location. Once you buy it is hard to sell. God Bless. Rob

Jamaica: 10 Tips for Living in Jamaica:

I'm a US Citizen and have been living in Kingston for the past 15 years. Several tips that will be helpful to enjoy the Island. 1- - learn to mix and live with Jamaicans, period! Surrounding your self just with expats will not give you a true JA experience 2- Pick a nice location to live (I live in Meadowbrook) which is not an area most would advise you on although it’s nice. When I fist came to Kingston I was living up in the hills and I was amazed how many houses get robbed up there. 3- Get used to the food, which rocks... come on a nice plate of stew peas beats a burger any day. 4- Learn to slow down. Everything in Jamaica is slower paced and it’s the hardest thing for me to get used to. 5- Stay out of "Garrison communities" although going to Raetown on Sunday night is one of the safest places in Kingston. I’ve been going there for 14 years to listen to some good music. 6- Racists do exist- although not that bad-being a white person I have not had many problems in fact outside of being targeted by squeegee at stop lights and police looking for a "something to hold" when pulled over. Although all Jamaicans go through it as well 7- Make sure the home you live in are grilled and be careful who you invite to your home. 8- When using a taxi – find a regular radio taxi and never accept a ride from someone you don't know 9- Jamaica has many good schools and I would recommend you to visit several before choosing one. 10- Enjoy your life- Jamaica is awesome.
