Uruguay: Birth Control in Uruguay:

It is my impression that the norm for health insurance in Uruguay is to sign on with an individual hospital, pay a monthly rate, and then go to this specific institution for all your procedures/check ups. My question is, how exactly does birth control work? Is it easy to obtain? Does it require a prescription after a gynecological exam such as in the US? Is it relatively expensive/inexpensive?
