South Africa: Ask a South African:

I am amazed to read the advice of some members on this forum regarding cost of living and crime in South Africa. I am South African and I wouldn’t dare to advice someone about the cost of living in South Africa or any other country without proper knowledge of that country. Living in the country for a few months or a couple of years does not make me an expert adviser on living in a place that I don’t know fully and completely. As an experience State Agent in Johannesburg, I must point out that Sandton is not the only safe place to live in Johannesburg, in fact is one of the most expensive areas to live. To the north of Johannesburg you will have many suburbs that are suitable for a middle class, that you could afford and to live in comfortably, more that than most people are use to live in their own country. I have traveled plenty and I can safely say that South Africa will offer a very comfortable and safe standard of living that you won’t find in many other count tries. Yes we do have crime like in many other countries, for that reason you will have to take care and be careful not to adventure to dubious places, without proper advice. South African are friendly people and will assist you and advise you properly. Banking is South Africa is expensive, however very modern and efficient. We live in a country with a blessed weather and with plenty space. We have modern and varied Shopping Mall everywhere as well as supermarket and the staff is very amiable and friendly. The public transport is scarce and therefore you will need a car. We do have a first world infrastructure. I am currently in Brazil for personal reason and here the cost of living is nearly 5 times more expensive than in South Africa. The crime is horrendous especially in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The variety and the quality of product are very poor, but still an amazing and great country with fantastic people and so is South Africa. However my experience in Brazil does not make me an expert in the country, because everybody has a different perception and reality of country and I respect that, therefore my opinion is personal according to my experience and what I expect of the country.

Global Expat Forum: Moving to Durban:

Hi!!! I read your note and there is no racial issue at all just because you are married to an Indian lady..This is the new South Africa..Durban is beautiful and very tropical it can get very hot in summer..just make sure that your contract is is place as well as the hours that you have to work..government tend to abuses their employees. Crime in South Africa is still a problem but thank God not like before, the police is working on a Zero Tolerance Policy..well that is what they say however it seems that has curb the crime rate...I have lived in SA for 35 years and I love it I would never consider moving anywhere else. Still one of the best places to live in the world..You will have to buy a car..there is a big choice of second hand cars just look for a reputable dealer..ask the right people to advise you even your colleagues at work. Welcome to the Sunshine Land and I hope that your stay with us will be a happy one.

South Africa: Cost of living in Joburg...:

I don't know who wrote the answer for those people that need it to know cost of living in Johannesburg but I can tell you that the answer given was absolutely irresponsible and ignorant to say the least. A salary of R6000.00 per month wont get you far a 2 bedroom flat in Johannesburg Fluctuate between 3.500 to 7.000 rands, per month. I jut can't believed that people talk so much rubbish and miss inform other poor individuals that need true facts to make a major change in their life. Please I beg of you don't allow people to write on this space and give a the wrong information about a country, that is very irresponsible and damaging for anybody that wish to emigrate to another place and change their life. The cost of living in Johannesburg is fast increasing, maybe due to the forthcoming World Cup and the lack of consumer protection and price control in South Africa ...We have no competition is a country that thrive on monopoly. Our prices rise without any previous notice and the consumer council due to the lack of qualified individuals do nothing about it. South Africa still a great place to live but you are looking for a middle class individual in orde to survive he must eran a salary of 20.000 rands per month. I went to South America in November, the price of Chicken per Kilo was 35.00 to 37.00 rands when I came back in January it has gone up to 50.00 rands per kilo. Fruit Juice was last year 8.00 to 10.00 rands today in February we are paying 15.00 rands per carton I hope this will be able to give you a better idea of what prices are like in this country. We also pay a lots of money for petrol and electricity due to bad management and individuals that are not qualify to take position as CEO and are merely political favors and have run Escom into a deficit and never invest into renewing obsolete equipment now we are paying for the upgrade in the region of 25% per cent increase per year or whenever they feel like it. We still a long way to go..but yes still we have a better standard of living than in many other places.

South Africa: Advice on moving to SA:

Hi!!! I have read your request. I must tell you that our standard of living in SA is great and salaries are geared to provide for our living expenses.....The way we live here you wont find it any where in the world. I have travel the world and I keep coming back to SA. I know that we do have a problem with crime but the government is doing all they can to wipe out the bad elements out of the country and specially now that the world cup is around the corner. I have just come back from Chile and the crime there is also bad..work wise I ma sure that you will be able to find a job in your field..but the place to look for work in Johannesburg not Cape Town...I hope that I help in a small way if you have any further queries please do not hesitate in contacting me.

South Africa: live in africa:

Dear Fatima = king Williams Town is in the Eastern Cape Province. Why KWT ???? Most of people emigrating to SA would like to relocate to Johannesburg(Financial Capital of Africa) and the largest city and is close to Pretoria the seat of Government, or Cape Town (Very trendy and a close society, but very beautiful) or Durban which is a fantastic place and very tropical and in the Indian Ocean it has a large Indian Community. The cost of living is not bad but I am sure less than in the USA. I shop every week and I spend for 4 people plus staff about ZAR 1500/per week and I come out with a trolley full of Groceries. Rent you might pay between ZAR 4000 to 6000 per month. You will need a car to move around, our transport system is not the best. Yes I am sure that you will get a job in your profession we need qualified professionals in any field. The standard of living in SA is excellent we do have a great life style even thou we have officially going into recession. I have lived in SA for the past 35 years and I love it , we do have problems with crime but the government is doing all they can in order to curve this terrible monster. Accommodation in SA is excellent and the weather is fantastic with very mild winters. We do have world class malls and infrastructure...The Government Hospitals are going through a major upgrade but private health is one of the best.....I do hope I have been able to assist you somehow..if you have any further queries please don not hesitate to contact me.
