Global Expat Forum: Moving to Rotterdam:
Hi, I am from Australia but carry a Dutch passport.
Sadly, having lived in Australia most of my life I dont speak Dutch. My husband and I are moving to Rotterdam January 2010 and i so want to work, even volunteer work. My background is in transport and sales which I think will be impossible not speaking Dutch. Does anyone have any idea where I should start looking??? My husband will be working abroad a lot of the time so making friends, meeting people is also a must. Anyone out there????

Ivory Coast: Gyms in Ivory Coast:
Hello there, sorry for the delay in responding to your emails but I am back in Australia at present and not spending quite as much time on the computer. I did start going to Calao and as Tamara mentioned, it is a place where you sort of go to be seen if you know what I mean. Mind, I go to work out and sweat in my old t-shirt and sweat pants - no make-up on this puppy!!! The machines are great, facilities are good, just a long way unless you live in the area. The other gym I found is in Cocody area. It is next to the Hotel Ivoir. They have really good equipment too and aerobics and are about the same price. The only difference is it isn't set out quite as good. Definitely not a place to go to be seen, people are just there working out which is good. Personally I like the set out at Calao and I just do my thing there. It's actually quite fun watching some of the women in their expensive matching gear with full faces on make-up trying to impress........There is also a place called the Athletic club. They have a pool, tennis and a large area where they do pilates, yoga, aerobics, judo, etc etc but I dont think they have machines. I will be back in Abidjan in November. Hope to catch up with you at a gym soon ......take care

Ivory Coast: Just arrived in Abidjan:

Netherlands: Feeling Isolated? Join the Expat Peer Support Group:

Ivory Coast: Adjusting to Expat Life in Ivory Coast:
Hi, the culture shock was more with the frustration of having no one to tell you what you needed to know. I had lived in Ghana before so it wasn't too bad from that point but with not speaking the language and having no one to ask if it was safe to walk on the streets during the day? How do the local people feel toward foreign women being out and about? Where do you shop? Are there markets for fresh fruit and vegetable? Where is a doctor for emergencies? Can I catch a cab, how does that work, do they have metres? These things were such a frustration that I became housebound and that is not good!!! Having another friendly face speaking your language to point you in the right direction would make the transition so much more easy without the fear and frustration.
