Mexico: Insurances on rental car long term:

Cancun Airport is the ripoff center of Mexico. And the car insurance does cost more than the car. If you rent a car, you will have to use their insurance. I do not know what your final destination is, but if you take a bus out of the airport and rent a car anywhere else, it will be cheaper. Decidedly so.

Mexico: Vacationing in Merida this Fall:

I think Merida is one of the most prosperous places in Mexico. And one of the cleanest. Many old colonials if that is your thing. You must visit the Mayan Museum. A lot to do. Many American & Canadian expats. Merida is about 1/2 hour from the coast. there is a small port of Progreso, which is nice. A good number of Canadian expats live there along with snow birds. Go to a small restaurant named Sol y Mar on Calle 70(I believe) Normally you will run into expats there. To the east is Chelem. some americans live there, but there is not much to do. Only 1 restaurant I think. To the west is Chicxulub. I like this little village. the people look Mayan. Canadians do live here. There is a nice market. this is really an odd part of Mexico in that not much fish is sold in markets. There is one in Progreso, but most of the time you make deals with fishermen. They usually go out at night or very early in the morning. They are back between 7-8. Past Chicxulub there is really nothing but expensive beach homes and condos. If this is your thing, they are very nice. But there are no water systems out there. You need a well or have your water delivered. It will be salt water. If you stay away from the coast, the Yucatan is a place where you can drill a 60 foot well and have clean fresh water.

Mexico: Campeche:

In the Merida-Progreso area, you might try Progreso Vacation Rentals. 514-807-2169 from the US. speak to Marissa Ortiz. she speaks English. I understand they also do long term rentals. They have a nice web site.

Mexico: COLIMA MEXICO:

Do you mean the state or the city? I like Manzanillo but find the city of Colima to be rather quiet. I also like the beaches in the small town of Cuyutlan.

Mexico: Basic Questions on Mexico:

The reason electronics are expensive in Mexico is the value added tax. I think it is 17% now. Buying time for phones is a good thing, although Carlos Slim has a monopoly with telemex.

Mexico: Looking for Manzanillo Expat:

I do not live in Manzanillo, but visit Susan in the Buceo(diving shop). She is from Texas but has lived there many years. She would be very helpful. Which restaurants are good, etc. Visit the Tortugas in Cuyutlan. Sit down and have a coco loco on the beach there. Tim

Mexico: Relocation Issues:

Try leaving Mexico with an expired tourist visa. Plan on spending a few hours with the aduana and paying substantial fines if you are over due a few years. I paid for 2 children 2 years overdue. The cost was 9000 pesos. And they were Mexican born in the US. Their parents never thought to make them Mexican citizens. Tim

Mexico: Translation Service in Manzanillo:

I don't think there is an much need for official translator in Manzanillo, but there would be jobs for bilingual people in real estate and restaurants. Stop at the Bucero(snorkling shop) and see Susan. She is from the Texas but has lived in Manzanillo many years. She would be happy to point you in the right direction. Tim

Mexico: Dream vs. Reality of Living in Mexico:

The fears or dreams should be no different from moving to Chicago from Philadelphia. After all, one would have to be nuts to move to someplace that they would not be familiar with.

Mexico: Where to live in Mexico:

Iturbide, It is sad you do not like Mexican ice cream. I think it is the best. Nothing like a creme pelata laced with chile powder. Timo
