Global Expat Forum: writers who explain living abroad.:
Hmmmm, while I agree that these two types exist, there is a plethora of writers who just talk about the good, bad and the ugly...without the sales pitch.
Venezuela: Planing a move to Margarita island:
As a non-Venezuelan living in Caracas, I encourage to try and do this if it's what you really want. I have found Venezuelans to be very warm and have no regrets moving here. As long as you know that there is no "perfect" country/place, you'll do just fine.
Unfortunately, I do not have a lot of information regarding Margarita Island, except that the cost of living is a lot lower than Caracas. Try looking on allexperts.com and do a search for Venezuela. One fo the "experts" on there currently lives on Margarita Island and is always willing to offer information about living there.
Good luck!
Venezuela: Adjusting to Expat Life in Venezuela:
I have been here a little over one month and so far, the hardest part for me is adjusting to the way business is conducted here. I have learned that when I see something in the grocery store that I like with a long shelf life, stock up on it - it may not be back in the store for another month. I find people here to be very friendly and for the most part, patient with those with limited Spanish. But definitely, Spanish is a MUST.
Also, it is customary to always greet people (especially those you see somewhat frequently). Sometimes when I'm walking somewhere my mind is drifting to other thoughts and places when I realize someone just said "good afternoon". So, politeness is important.
That's all I got for now - I'm sure I'll have more to say in a few months.
