I'm a software developer from Montana and my girlfriend is a high school math teacher. We are moving to Uruguay in January 2010 and prepared to live like the locals as best as possible.

Uruguay: Settling into the rural coast:

Hello all, My girlfriend and I are moving to Uruguay in January (sight-unseen). We are planning to spend 1-2 months involved in a volunteer program and/or language school (still working out the details). During this period, we'd be figuring out Uruguay and where/how we want to settle down. At the moment, I'm having one of those "oh-crap-is-this-even-possible" moments. Using my best Spanish (which is bad) I'm trying to search for apartments in La Paloma, Punta del Diablo, and similar areas. Can anyone tell me if it's likely to find a 1-2 bedroom apartment (within 5-10 blocks of the beach) for <$500 a month? We want to settle in a small town and live as cheap as possible -- with only a computer, internet connection, and a surfboard... :) I've read some reasons as to why this might not be the best idea (and I'm willing/need to hear you thoughts!). Does anyone even know if it's even possible? Thanks so much in advance! It is very difficult to find this information! Ryan
