Panama: Canadians coming to Panama-Let's Meet:
We live in Las Tablas -- always happy to meet up, although we'll be busy as we'll be preparing to fly back to the US for a visit shortly after that. Send me a PM.
Panama: Safe areas to check out:
Haven't seen much about my part of the country -- Las Tablas is where I've been for the past year. You want safe? Safe is its middle name. Crimes of opportunity (theft), sure, but violence?? Nada. Or Chitre, Los Santos, if you like the beach there's Rompio, Uverito and several others.
Panama: Retirement in Las Tablas, Panama:
You need to get boots on the ground and experience several places for yourself. I've been in Las Tablas for a year now. It's a friendly, welcoming community and it's much cooler than David ever thought of being! We rent a 3 BR /2BA fully furnished house for $400/month. That's pretty easy to find around here. I write pretty extensively about our adventures in Panama and Las Tablas at http://futureexpats.com. A couple months ago I published an actual budget. My husband and I and our 3 dogs live very comfortably on less than what you'll have available.
Panama: Advice on Chitre:
I've been in Las Tablas for almost a year now. It's a friendly town and the expat community, although small, is definitely findable. :-)
Panama: crossing borders with pets:
You realize that every time you cross a border with your pets you'll have to go through similar health certifications as you do to bring them from the US to Panama initially, right?
And no, you can't bring dogs on public transportation. The only ones I've seen on buses have been pocket sized. :-)
Panama: Horses in Panama?:
I live in Las Tablas and horses are EVERYWHERE here on the Azuero Peninsula. In fact, we recently came home from doing some errands and found a horse parked in front of our driveway. For a lot of people who live in the mountains, horses are the primary means of transportation.
Panama: SOLAR:
Don't think there's much available, but there may be soon. My husband may be partnering with someone to provide solar in Panama, would probably be based around Penonome (not that far from Coronado). Will certainly let you know when that becomes a reality.
Panama: GPS & Cell Phones:
Corinna, if you get an android smart phone with a data plan it will have GPS capability built in. Where GPS is workable, it will work very well, no need to buy a separate GPS unit.
Panama: Cheap Living in Las Tablas?:
Fred, my husband and I have just returned home from Las Tablas. While there, we met about a dozen North American expats and we hears independently from at least half of them that they are living on less than $1,000/month. We were talking to someone about rents in the $150-200 range for a house in town. . . a bit more at the beach
Panama: Visiting Panama in April, David & Las Tablas:
Deb, thanks for the info.
