Switzerland: English speaking schools in Switzerland:
I can thoroughly recommend the Zurich International School in Waedenwil. It is expensive but if many companies were run like that school...it would be amazing! The way I look at it is that it is well spent money! I am truly impressed with how they work with the children (I have three children in different classes at the school). They put in a lot of care, time and energy. The teaching staff and the remaining staff at the school are excellent; well-prepared, energetic, committed. Children deal, in a very child-friendly and yet very thoughtful way, with the 'big things in life' e.g. the cycle of life; environmental issues; work-place and how systems work; religion and how it affects the life of people around the world etc etc. They structure the year around several big themes and integrate all the activities around those e.g. science; maths; language etc.
They also develop kids in a rounded way and make them real citizens of the world as opposed to just stuffing notions into their head...Kids learn also that they are very fortunate and have the responsility to help the community around them and far away e.g. they engage themselves locally as well as for the kids of a school in Ghana. There are over 45 nationalities at the school and it is a truly open-minded place... All the subjects are integrated, hence kids learn in a very practical way why certain things are important...they work in groups and rotate in groups; the are very strong in sport, IT, languages and music...They teach kids to be inquisitive and question things...They develop leadership skills in kids at a very young age and in a very age-appropriate way - my son has made his first Powerpoint presentation a few years ago (!) working on a specific subject with his other friends in class.
They tune into the need of each child - and they provide help and support if the child needs it. In fact each child has his own development programme. The ZIS community (see www.zis.ch) is very strong indeed and very welcoming....The facilities are very good and technologically advanced (smart boards; laptops from the age of 6 for specific tasks..)..They learn also through blogs and an intranet..
Hope this gives you a feel.
All the best. christina
