France: Living in the Loire:
Nantes is a very vibrant town with excellent quality of life on the Loire, but you probably want something smaller. My sister lives in one of the the very small town just west of Nantes and enjoys it a lot.
A little farther away, I was amazed by the vibrancy of the very small community of Herisson on the Aumance, north of Montlucon. My wife and I had a picnic there and were blown away by the cultural life in a town of 1000 people.

Cyprus: Seeking info on low cost rental/house share?:
Hi, Joe--
I'm interested in sharing notes with you about Cyprus. I'm a 60 year old American who is considering retiring to Cyprus with my wife. We are into biking, hiking, cooking, world music, films, etc.
Can we converse via e-mail? daveapia@willinet.net

South Africa: What about costs?:
Hi,
I'm not South African, but an interested American. This is a response to one of your questions. You should check out the wonderful web sites for real estate agencies in ZA. ( Some of them have rental property, too.) One suggestion is

Canada: Retirement in Canada:
Hi, Earl --
I'm researching the same question that you raise here. I haven't been able to get a solid answer yet. I do know that my wife and I would not get enough points to become 'landed immigrents.' Consequently, we are investigating other approaches. I understand Canada did eliminate the 'retiree' category some time ago-- perhaps because of the health care system they have in place.
Currently, I'm trying to find people who have retired in Canada --- other than the fairly wealthy who have several ways to get resident status. I'm also trying to find out the practicalities of living in Canada without being a resident.
I have found a Canadian attorney experienced in these matters who would undertake our 'case' at the rate of $350 per hour for an initial consultation. I'd like to do some more research before spending that kind of money.
I'll be glad to share with you and this forum what I find out. My email address is daveapia@willinet.net

Ivory Coast: marrying an I.C. woman:
Hi, James --
This info is from my sister who lived in the IC for eight years but now lives in France:
"foreigners can live and work in france but they need to obtain a permis de sejour
i believe this requires either a work contract like in the usa or else proof of revenue
lots of foreigners live here but many hold independent jobs like architects, artists etc..."
*************************
There are lots of IC people in France and most of them can work legally. It is easy to buy property in France with the help of a lawyer. France even has health insurance for foreigners that is quite inexpensive.
You might want to subscribe to "France" an excellent bimonthly publication from England, but available in the US by subscription. It gives lots of advice in every issue about living and traveling in France.(See www.francemag.com)

Taiwan: Possible Move to Taiwan:
My wife and I just turned 60. We are energetic and love travel. My wife is being considered for an ESL teaching position in Taiwan. Do you have any suggestions of things we would need to consider in deciding to accept any offer? What can you tell us about the cost of living? How easy is it to get away from the city for hiking and photography? How expensive is the health care?
Taiwan: Hiking & Mountaineering:
I looked at the Lonely Planet guide to Taiwan a few days ago at a book store. I believe the text discussed about how to get permits for hiking. ( My wife may be offered a job teaching in Taiwan, so that's the reason for my interest.)
Canada: Selling house in US/buying house in Canada:
Great question since we are contemplating a similar move (not Vancouver though) in the future. Did you get a response?
Canada: Relocating from N England:
How did you find the cost of living in Ottawa? How do you like the area?
