Portugal: Cascais vs Lagos:

Hi Picareno As a long term Cascais resident, and also lived in the Algarve for 10 years, I can tell you the following: Cascais has probably higher rents, but then again has a more "normal" life. Lots of entertainment, Going into Lisbon only takes you 30 min by train. Beautiful coastal scenery. There are plenty of expats if you want to mingle, but you don't have to bump into them everywhere ;-) There's a great market in the centre of Cascais if you want to sniff some local culture on Wed and Sat. What else would you like to know ? If you use Facebook, join groups like Residential Property Rentals & Sales Cascais And Nearby, Local Services & News in Cascais / Sintra & Lisbon You can find cheap rentals in an area called Sao Joao das Lampas, which is 25 km North of Cascais ( part of Sintra ) but you will probably need a car and maybe that's not your case. Anyway, if I can be of any help, let me know.

Try Imovirtual. It all depends on your budget....

Portugal: Potential places to live:

I would say Cascais is the best of both worlds. Within half an hour you can be in Lisbon or Sintra for the old charm and there are plenty of likeminded people in Cascais to make friends with. I dont find it easy to make friends with the Portuguese even if you master the language. It's about sharing the same interests whether it's a foreigner or a local. Good luck with your search !

Portugal: Affordable areas around Lisbon:

Try looking at www.imovirtual.com and see what is available. You can set a distance from Lisbon. Look around Oeiras. Or anything down the Cascais railway line, those are the best areas. Good luck.

Portugal: Cost of living-Algarve:

In my opinion it will be hard to find something for as little as 200 usd. I lived in the Algarve for 10 years and found a 1 bedrm apartment with a terrace and seaview for 350 Euros. And remember you have to put up with the summer inconveniences ??

Portugal: Housing Question:

You just wear an extra sweater in the house ha ha Serously, that's what was done before...now you have different options..electric, woodburners, and central heating in the newer properties.
