I wouldn't live in Mindanao ever, but there are people who are and there are expats who are enjoying and surviving :)
Anyway, I just met with a group of British and other nationals who have been in the Philippines for the last 20 years and what they do is provide security systems, security measures for expats and other VIPs. If you are interested, I can connect you with them so you can find out how you can secure yourself. You can be secured from the time you leave UK, even if you need to do a stopover to another country and upon arrival here at General Santos.
Found it fascinating that we have that kind of group here. I am looking at it from the standpoint of protecting my own family as well and whenever there might be a chance that some expats like us will be in a group anywhere.
It's always best to have security measures wherever we are.
