We left Dhaka in 2000 and have gained some perspective since. It is a polluted crowded city. Expats live in a part of the city called Gulshan. As it is difficult to become part of the mainly muslim society, expats meet in clubs which are located in Gulshan in nice villas with pools and tennis. There are many of them and by being member in one you can also use the others. You can buy most things you are used to. The American International School was a success for our daughter then 13. Countryside is beatuiful as are the rivers. Some companies arrange cruises. It is easier to get an apartment than a house,. Many newbuilt apartments of high standard. Look for the level of cleanliness though. Houses can be humid and faulty. It is cheap to fly to India and it is maybe easier to be a tourist there. Most pepole go to Thailand but the flight is quite expensive. We made some friendship with eduacted muslims and enjoyed much to be with them although there is a huge cultural gap between us which makes coming together a bit difficult. Everybody loves a rich expat. Ask yourself why you help and if your assistance is sustainable and really helpful or is only to calm your conscience. Pickpocketing yes, but criminality is mainly restricted to Bangladeshis among whom its violent. I do not suppose you will walk at night. When looking back we had some nice moments and good meetings with people but two years was quite enough.
