United Arab Emirates: Moving to Abu dhabi:
Our company paid for virtually everything to be shipped, so we did. I'm glad we have all our familiar house goods here. Most companies are not so generous, so most expats buy a lot when they get here. We shipped our car, which I feel was a very cost effective decision, comparied to leasing or buying a car here. We brought all our small electric appliances, and use them with a converter bought from www.voltagevalet.com Some of them work and some go up in a puff of smoke. My husband bought a very expensive transformer so he could use all his stereo equipment here, because he is a real audiophile. Dont bring items that have to be plugged in all the time, like a TV, because the transformers are just for intermittant use. Go to the website for the American Women's Network for social activities.
United Arab Emirates: Abu Dhabi Bound:
You cant get a residency visa without a job. You can come here on a tourist visa, which is good for a month. You can leave the country and come back for another 30 days. (I have heard that some people drive to Oman and come back). It is hard to start a small business here unless you have an Emirati "sponser". I believe it is easier to start a business in Dubai, because they have what they call "free zones" for entreprenuers. I am not an expert in that area, but I would suggest you do a LOT of research on the rules before you come here.
