Mexico: chapala:
Tricia, I pm'dyou. My husband and I are on a similar schedule and journey.
Mexico: Does anyone bank with USAA?:
We're still a ear from retirement but I want to establish an account well ahead of time.
Mexico: Attending retire in Mexico seminar:
Has anyone attended one of these? I am thinking of attending a small private one in Ajijic. I think the structure will help us to us during our exploratory visit this summer. We have 10 days for this first visit, and I can see us frittering our time away at the spas in San Juan, in the markets etc. But would like to hear views of others before committing.
Mexico: Who here is heading to Lake Chapala area?:
I think several people have mentioned on other threads that they are exploring the idea of or planning on moving to the Lake Chapala area, as I am. I thought it might be fun or useful to compare notes.
I am Elisabeth and have started investigating this with my husband. I have a lot of mainly short term overseas experience, though I lived in Tunisia for 2 years while in the Peace Corps. We'll reach full SS age next year, and will need to live carefully for 5 years or so, then should have more $. And I am tired of the political paralysis and nastiness that seems to me to have taken over in the last 15 years. George likes the quiet life and I need to be involved in civic life, so Lakeside seems like a good option for us. We are planning our first trip down for late June - early July, for only 10 days. Then we'll see; if things seem right, I would want to apply for TR visas next summer (we will qualify financially) and look for something to rent. We would live there full time
Mexico: Effects of policies of new administration on lives of expats living in Mexico?:
Giershift 43, good to hear someone who has been there recently and plans to keep considering it. My husband and I are still planning to go down to LC area this summer on exploratory visit. I will OK you with special specific site suggestions. I still find old fashioned we boards and forums like this most helpful. There are Facebook groups but I don't like k up much useful there.
Mexico: 65 and over health insurance:
If you are over 65, I would like to hear what you are doing about health insurance. Do you have private insurance? self-insure? And what does it mean to "keep medicare"? We have just turned 65 but are still employed, so we haven't yet looked at cost of supplemental care if we stay here. Do you purchase supplemental care in the US (in case you have to return someday) and also get private health insurance there? Or do you buy health insurance for Mexico and plan to pick up cost again someday if you return to US (and I am not even sure that is possible). Feel free to private message me if you prefer, and thanks.
Mexico: In answer to "have you eexperienced anti amercanism thread.:
Thank you, Louixo; that is a very helpful answer. I am considering moving, and this is a question people like me are bound to wonder about. It has nothingn to do with my politics, but we are all aware that big differences in policy can create strong feelings. Like others who are considering the move, all I am interested in is hearing from people now living in Mexico what the reaction is from Mexicans.
Mexico: Recommended books on moving to Mexico?:
I've seen several books being sold about moving to Mexico and wondered if you all have recommendations on what's good vs. what to skip. While gather information online is great, I really like to have reference books. For example, Mexperience sells several books as pdfs. Then there's "Mexico - the Trick Is Living Here" by Julia Taylor - and I am sure there are more. Any advice would be welcome. (We are about 18 months out from a long-term visit but am researching and hoping to come for a week in May or October). Thanks, Elisabeth
Mexico: Shipping books & music?:
I've read enough on here to know we should not think about shipping furniture, but what about books, CDs, and record albums? My husband has a lot he really, really wants to keep. And I have a couple dozen paintings done by my mother and grandmother. Any suggestions for moving these?
