Ecuador: Moving to Olon:

Hi Rebe! We live in Olon (have owned our house here for four years, and moved here permanently 15 months ago). We love it here, and would be happy to answer any questions you might have. As mentioned above, I also write the blog "Olon Again...Naturally" about our life here if you are interested to hear more. A bit of disclosure - our 3bd/3 ba house next to the beach if for sale - but that is only because we want to build on our lot next door. You are right to do your homework and visit areas you are interested in first...One thing for sure - be sure you purchase property with a free and clear deed (get any good lawyer - there are many good references on this forum). In answer to a couple of your questions: I´ve never known of the river north of town to flood, but let me ask a few of the locals. The local vet is Wilmer...he is okay, but there are also a few other vets around that we rather recommend. RE bugs - I am actually surprised we don´t see more of them here too. When we moved here, I was prepared to brace myself for mutant sized cockroaches, but generally the only ones I´ve ever seen in our house are normal size dead ones. I am kind of the thought that our floor cleaning solution (mild detergent) knocks them off....However, we also do spray our house occasionally - termites in particular can be expected with any home along the beach here, and we spot treat problem areas when we see them (it´s not like you can get Terminex to "tent" your house here). Still, termites rather minor issue. The big store on the Ruta that you are speaking of is going to be another new, larger grocery store. Our main grocery store is Oloncito Market, and the same owners - Antonio and Patricia are building the new one. Eventually they want to add a pizzaria on top level. Olon is generally quiet, unless there is a party going on - usually during the Dec-Apr busy season...and these folks can party! The real loud party is in nearby Montanita (about 2 KM south of us). Also, it depends on what your definition of quiet is, because there is always roosters crowing, dogs barking, horns honking - LOL...You get used to it. We are in our drizzly/cloudy season now, and it lasts from about mid-June until mid December. The temperature generally stays steady at around 65-70, and we do have some sunny, wonderful days now and then...Many folks here like this weather, though speaking only for myself, by the end of November, I am ready for the sunny days. The good thing is that the streets of Olon are paved....Nearby Curia and Manglaralto are mainly dirt streets, and it is no fun treading through the gloppy mud after a rain. Dont know if the dirt road by the riverbed goes directly to beach, but I will check. If you have more questions, please email me at leigh@ecuafriendly.com (don´t send me a Private msg via this forum, since I rarely check the email acct that I use for this site).´ I apologize for any spelling or punctuation errors - right now at our Olon internet cafe instead of on our laptop, and the keyboards can be - shall we just say...hmmm ....different. Hope we have chance to meet!

Hi Larry (ZachBuck) If you are visiting the coast, please come visit our lovely area of Olon. Olon is a quiet and safe fishing village, good infrastructure and located on one of the prettiest beaches in Ecuador. Nearby is the town of Montanita, which is a lively party town full of young surfers, lots of restaurants and bars. A fun change of pace when Olon gets too quiet. We have had a home here for 4 years, and have lived here permanently for almost a year. We have no regrets and have never been bored. Every day is an adventure here. We are the same age as you, and can appreciate the decisions you are making now. If you are interested in learning more about our area, I write a blog at http://leighfrost-olon.blogspot.com/ - Please don't hesitate to contact me directly if you have more questions. Best of luck in your endeavors!

Ecuador: Anyone hear from Kim lately:

Hi Chris! He stayed with us a couple of night in mid December - all seemed fine. Man, that guy can bike! Had wonderful things to say about you. Have a safe journey here, and keep in touch. Leigh leigh@ecuafriendly.com

Ecuador: WHO LIVES IN ECUADOR? PART 2:

Hi, I´m Leigh, and my husband Todd and I bought a house on the beach in Olon (along the Ruta del Sol) over 3 years ago. We moved here full time 7 months ago, and couldn´t be happier! The best email address to reach me: leigh@ecuafriendly.com, and I would be happy to answer any questions anyone has. Feliz Ano Nuevo to all!

Ecuador: Earthquake Coast Today - anyone feel it?:

Susan, THAT explains why we found ourselves on the ground...LOL. Seriously, what earthquake? Didn´t feel it here.

Ecuador: Hotels In Bahia:

Larry, Hope you will come look us up in Olon if you pass through here. Would love to meet you and show you around here if you have time.
