Netherlands: Seeking Engineering Job:
Hi, I am trying desperately to get an engineering job near Amsterdam. I am a Mechanical Engineer, not computer or software, and have a background in power generation, and gas as well as some manufacturing experience. It seems to me that there is little engineering going on in Amsterdam, but more to the South, in Utrecht, Rotterdam etc.
Does anyone know of any good recruitment resources (websites, agencies, journals/publications) for non-Dutch nationals in the Netherlands? I am missing my girlfriend and bored at home in Ireland!
Ireland: warnings to people of color/warning regarding crime:
Anna,
I'm sorry to hear about your experience - the fact that the medical staff treated you so badly makes it so much worse. I am Irish, and currently living in Dublin.
You may be interested (and not surprised) that there will be a nurses strike shortly to protest at the conditions in the Accident and Emergency sections of Irish hospitals. Queueing for hours, lack of bed space, lack of a section for drug and alcoholic problems ... the list goes on.
Racial tensions are something that have only come to Ireland recently - we have changed over the past few years from a country exporting people through emigration, to a country accepting people from abroad who want to come and work here. The most visible change on our streets is seeing more peole of non-Irish origin around - unfortunately some people have an adverse reaction to that.
I have discussed this issue with a colleague of mine from Malaysia, who has had similar (if less severe) experiences. His reaction is that it is not really any different here to other countries, but perhaps Ireland puts on a more welcoming and friendly 'mask', which hides a darker undercurrent to the society.
I'd like to apologise for what happened to you ... and hope that it hasn't ruined your stay here. The issue is being addressed, but i have to say that Ireland being the hotbed of corruption, and political apathy that it is, I don't expect things to change too quickly.
Regards,
JOT, Dublin.
