Each of the towns you mention have their own attractions. However, I understand Montpellier, if you can find somewhere you like/can afford in the centre, not far from the Place de la Comedie, a car is not needed as there are excellent transport options (tram, rail, buses, etc. in fact car use is discouraged for getting around as there are plenty of large carparks within easy access of the main centres of activity) and it has an exceedingly good cultural events programme. It also has an airport, and is not that far from the coast. Hope this is of some help.

France: Summer rental in Montpellier:

I have a friend who has an apartment available for rent in Montpellier. I do not know details of costs/terms etc. but she can be contacted on the following email: heatherwardlaw@hotmail.fr Montpellier is a wonderful centre and her place is only a few minutes walk from the Place de la Comedie (main centre) with its bustling hsops and restaurants, and within the historic and cultural area where it is possibe to walk within a short distance to most of the museums and cultural events. Montpellier has excellent tranport links (tram, rail, buses, airport) and is well placed for visiting other parts of the Department. Hope Heather can help you with accommodation. Best wishes.
