Bahamas: Husband seeking help...:

I resided in Nassau for 3 yrs with friends and did not need to work since I was retired and receiving an annuity. I always asked for at least 90-180 days on the immigration form and usually it was granted by immigration. I just had to go and get an extension if time was running out. Then I would leave and go back to the US for several weeks and return to Nassau and stay another 5 months or so. Since you are already married to a Bahamian you should have it much easier and just follow instructions others have noted to you. You should plan to go for a visit just to see exactly what you need from immigration. It can be very confusing and if you don't have all they require it gets very stressful.

Bahamas: Minimum income to retire in the Bahamas?:

Hi Melissax, I am a federal gov't retiree and lived for 3 yrs in Nassau. You didn't mention if you retired from city, state or federal gov't, and I am not familiar with other than federal pay/pensions. Dolphie is correct in cost to live there. I had a 2BR unfurnished for $800 a mo. From November to March I did not need AC or ceiling fans on. I bought an electric stove which I was accustomed to. If you have gas stove you have to purchase the gas. They deliver to your place. Not like the US. I talked the landlord into him paying the water bill so that I didn't have to deal with. Satellite TV was $80, internet $20. I bought the Magic Jack phone so I could call free to the US. Had a local cell phone and just bought phone card since I wouldn't be making many calls. Food is rather expensive. I love Bryers ice cream but at $8-10 I could do without. I was able to live very comfortable on my pension. You should probably try visiting for a month or so renting short term just to get a feel to make sure it's what you want. Also you need to know Immigration requirements on residing in the Bahamas. Feel free to inbox me and I will answer any questions you may have if I can.

Bahamas: Moving companies from Nevada to Bahamas HELP!!!!:

YOU REALLY DON'T HAVE MUCH TIME AND IF YOU HAVEN'T FOUND ANYTHING YET I HOPE THIS HELPS. YOU WOULD MOST LIKELY HAVE TO GET A COMPANY FROM NEVADA THAT SHIPS TO THE CARIBBEAN. THAT CO WOULD GET YOUR BELONGINGS TO MIAMI AREA AND THEN THE THINGS WOULD GO BY BOAT TO THE BAHAMAS. WHEN IN BAHAMAS IT HAS TO BE CLEARED BY CUSTOMS, ETC. I HOPE THIS HELPS.

Bahamas: Shipping from Nassau to USA:

4moreyears, you and I have the same thoughts. I am planning on moving back to the US also and in need of the same info. So far I have only inquired with Kelly's and they gave me info to contact Martin's Moving & Trucking, Mackey St by PI bridge, tel # 893-1173. I haven't contacted them as yet since I plan the move beginning of 2013. If anyone has had experience doing so or knows what type of containers can be used please let us know. please do so. I also have plastic storage containers filled mostly with clothing. Have household goods also to ship.=, i.e. dishes, cookware, desktop computer etc.

Bahamas: Rec's for immigration attorneys & expat medical insurance in Nassau?:

Being I'm an ex US Immigration employee and have seen so many people give their money to attorneys when they could have gotten the same information for free and completed the forms themselves as long as you can read and write the english language, I would suggest going to the immigration office and speaking with an immigration officer. You can also check their website to see if any info is contained there also. I hope this helps you in that part of your inquiry.

Bahamas: Direct TV in Freeport:

Hello Flamingoer, In Nassau you can get Directv. I'm not sure about Freeport but you can check with Radio Shack or QBC there. They are the ones who have the hookup. I got it 2 yrs ago when they came out with it and had a promotional rate going. I don't know the installation and rates now but I get all the movie channels + the others included for $79per month. In the US it was $100 and only 2 movie channels. Good Luck.

Bahamas: Postage from the US:

I have just found out about Post Boxes, Etc. They are in the Super Value shopping center, Cable Beach and also on Frederick St, downtown Nassau. You can go online at www.postboxesetc.com. It gives you all the info. They do much more than mail.

Bahamas: Customs Broker:

From my experience with shipping barrels to Nassau when your containers arrive you will go to the shipping co, sign papers and pay them a fee. You then get a broker to go over YOUR list as to what is contained in the containers. The company may have one there in their office. They do an estimate of the cost. You then go to the the office where the shipment is being held. You then see a Customs Officer and they will go thru the containers with you and place an amount based on the estimate of the broker. It will be lower since it will be pro rated. Then you will have to go to the Customs main office to pay that amount before your containers can be released. It can be an all day affair. Possibly have to go back the next day. You should have your list of things and put your own assesment of value. Using the lowest amount you think they will accept. You never know. Most times they won't go through everything but you never know so you have to be prepared. This is only my experience. Possibly others have their own. Good luck on your move.

Bahamas: Having a baby in the Bahamas?:

Hi Chefkeats, Good luck and congratulations to you both. You didn't state which Bahamas Island you are going to be working in. Here in Nassau I haven't had any reason to go to the hospitals or doctor but I do know they will not compare to those in the US. I'm sure it will be more expensive here. I read the one in Freport is not as good as the one in Nassau. There are 2 here, the government one, Princess Margaret and Doctor's Hospital. As for your gf coming and going as long as you follow immigration rules she should have no problem. You should check the website, bahamas.gov.bs to get familiar. She must have a return ticket when she arrives. Immigration will stamp her passport giving her 30-60-90 days whichever they decide on. Say they stamp it for 30 days and she has a ticket for 50 days she would have to report to immigration before the 30 days and ask for an extension. This is all I can give, hopefully, someone with doctor and hospital experience will be able to fill you in.

Bahamas: Moving from NYC to Nassau:

Hi kcjones21, I moved here from NJ a year ago. I did not bring my furniture figuring it would be too expensive to ship.I sold/gave away most things. Also sold my house and car. Buyers bought the LR and DR furniture which was a big help. The things I wanted to bring here I had shipped in barrels. You can get a lot in them, believe me. Since you are in NY, there are plenty of stores that sell the barrels if you are interested. A company I dealt with was Scottys Caribbean Shipping in Bklyn, 718-941-8443. They should be able to ssist you on this and any other shipping questions you may have. Barrels can be bought for under $30. Shipping to Bahamas was at that time $130 per barrel. Since you say you want to bring your furniture it may be cheaper to go the other route where everything can be shiped together, e.i. household goods, clothing, canned and other non perishable foods. You have plenty of time to think and the best thing to do is to plan ahead and get rid of all you don't want. I had it all to do in the end. Very stressful. I had a last minute buyer for my house so I had to move quick. I hope this info is helpful. Please let me know if you have any others.
