Egypt: Moving to Egypt...What do I bring?:
Hi, I lived in Cairo 3 years and you can buy everything there cheaper. Electricity is 220v so bringing things from North America needs a plug adapter as over there is 2 prong and you can buy a transformer from Attaba Square (converts 220 to 110v) or bring one with you. You can buy lots of kitchen applicances there, Zahran on Syria Street in Mohandissen is very good, or any Omar Offendi (govt dept store) sells everything. City Stars mall in Heliopolis (Nasr City) is 7 floors of stores and services including Calvin Klein, Gap, Benelton, etc and a great grocery store on the first floor. Prices are similar to north america or you can head downtown off Tahrir square and pick up good clothes and shoes for a fraction of the price. I would bring your digital camera, computer, Ipod but dont bother with CD's, DVD's and the like. You can continue to buy online as easy. Banking is simple as you can access your account from there using Intrac bank card. Dont bother with mail as it is poor service unless you go to your embassy to send or receive your mail. Fedex is good service, expensive. If you need any help, just email me at nmwh48@yahoo.com and will answer any questions.
Egypt: Paying taxes in Egypt:
If you are canadian, you should be checking with Revenue Canada. Canada and Egypt have an international tax agreement but check with Revenue Canada to see what is best to do. It will also depend on if you go non-resident status...being out of Canada for more than 12 months, this will change your status to non-residence and this also has implications. If your contract says they will deduct 20%, make sure they are give you a tax receipt so you can file. Canadian Embassy is in Garden City and you can file there or online.
Yemen: Planning move to Middle East:
I am considering moving to Yemen and would like to hear from anyone who has moved or lived there recently. Lived in Cairo for 3 years and been to Yemen a number of times. Am married to Yemeni so no issues in this sense, would just like to hear about your story or advice, email at nmwh48@yahoo.com.
Saudi Arabia: Bringing personal artifacts into the KSA?:
If worried about the content, transfer the photos to digital ones and if really worried just email them to yourself. Once in KSA just print them out at home, then now worries or buy a digital photo album and download to the memory or memory stick. No worries then.
Yemen: Planning Move to Sana'a Yemen:
I am married to Yemeni and planning to move to Sana'a possibly in 2012. Would like to hear from anyone, particularly women, on how they are finding life there. I have been in the country several times but interested in your story, email me at nmwh48@yahoo.com. thanks
Global Expat Forum: Transition from Miami to Dubai...plz advice!:
Hi, good luck with your move. Remember Dubai is a Muslim country and you must respect the country and their religious rules even if you don't agree. I lived in Cairo and had no problem, what I wore in Canada, I wore there with no issues - I dress respectfully here as there. I have never travelled to Dubai but I have in the middle east and men and women are often separate in some activities. The gym is one, the pool may or may not be depending on the location. If you live in an apartment, there may be facilities there, check to see if you can use or what restrictions there are for women. Also note that if you find a woman's center, they may expect you to adhere to some clothing restrictions. Go onto the arab chat rooms and ask to talk with people living in Dubai, trust me you will find someone, remember there are lots of different nationalities that live there. Lots of Brits are there and go on to UK sites and see if you can connect with anyone who has lived there. If you are going to work at a company, they often help with advice on settling there. Be patient, be respectful and don't expect that you will live, dress or move around like you do in Miami, especially on the beach. Go there and enjoy the wonders that UAE has to offer and I'm sure it will make your stay more enjoyable. All the best.
