Paraguay: Residency- do we really need costly attorneys/ facilitators?:

Eureka, You wrote that there are "numerous complaints on expatblog" about Alice Neufeld. Where? I have not seen any complaints. You will need residency to open a bank account, and you will have to deposit $5,000 in Banco Fomento into a special account while your residency is in process (unless you own property in Paraguay). You will not be able to withdraw the funds until your residency is completed (at least 3 months with a GOOD facilitator.) Paraguay is not straight forward like Uruguay, so beware.

Stanley, Paraguay is the wild west, as it were. As a gringo/foreigner, many if not most things will cost you 3 times more in the end, though that will not be obvious or disclosed up front. The best protection is a good attorney for everything you do, though that is not foolproof. Courts are inherently biased for the Paraguayan and rulings are highly subjective. If you want security and fairness, consider Uruguay. I'd never recommend Paraguay to anyone unless he/she married a Paraguayan and had a lot of money to grease wheels when necessary, and at some point it WILL be necessary. If you can't do that, or you have a problem with it, you do not belong in Paraguay. If you decide to go anyway, you MUST have an exit plan and under no circumstances spend more than you can afford to lose. Peace, T.

She is a very interesting person and has a lot of fascinating stories about the history of Paraguay.
