China: DRIVE LICENSE:
I have mine. I studied an English version of the driving book. took the test twice, first time scored 83, second time 93 which is passing. Test was in English, had some trouble with the police signs. But am happy to be driving where I want to go.
China: Is Guilin actually Pretty?:
They are both beautiful. My home is in Hechi with the hills all around. Slum is not a word for these places. Guilin would be my first pick.
China: Keep US cell number while overseas:
I suggest getting a Magicjack for your travel. I got 5 years with an American phone number. I talk to the USA everyday and have it on my cell phone here in China. The Android app I dont need to be home to get or call.
China: Immunizations for China:
hepatitis B, this is one to add.
Also bring a letter from your Doctor about your Meds, just in case. I did not need one and carry on the plane with you. They must have your name on the bottles with your Dr. name, asprin and such are ok without. Bring someting for your stomach as you will go through a change in your diet the first month or so. Hope this helps. Mike
China: cell phones:
Wont do any good to buy a phone in America for here in China, unless you can put a sim card from here in it. Phones are cheap here and you must buy a simcard to work. You can buy a Magicjack from Walmart or Walgreens that you can use on your Laptop or desktop here, there is even an Android app you can download to an Android phone here if you buy one. It can call America free. Hope this helps, Mike
China: Teaching in China SOON:
I think it is one of the best cities in China. Clean, most people are very friendly, Your next to the metro if you want to go to Hong Kong, Good food, very modern city. Higher educated people in the city as well.. If you have a Android tablet you can download a few apps to help you, map, locations of most any thing, metro for Honk Kong. Enjoy your time there.
China: Buying a car in China:
Sounds like me 2 years ago. I have been here 8 years. The Chinese drivers lic. took me two trys to get about 90 on the computer test. They did not have an English book for me to study. Used vans are 12-18,000rmb higher for 1.2-1.4 moters. Driving in China is not like the states, to many e bikes and 3 wheel carts. Roads in the country are always being worked on and the hwy cost alot in tolls. If you have a friend in China maybe can find you someone to stay with. Have you ever been to China? I live with my wife in Nanning, Guangxi China. To much to write here, but if I can help let me know. Michael
China: Trekking by rail to Nanning:
I don't know how long you will be in Nanning, but if you like several of us can meet you for lunch here. Just keep me up on when. Michael Duncan
China: Question for Expats:
depends on what work you do, how much you are paid and where you live. A new SS tax started July 1, after 6 months you must pay a percentage plus income tax. This lowers your take home pay. I would check with your employer what you will be responsable for. Also if they will give you a place to live. More information on what you plan to do would help.
