Algeria: Lack of social life in Algeria.:
Yes I had this problem too... I am back in UK now some places to try... Shisha room in dely brahim nr the thai/indian restaurant, pasha at the sheritan hotel on sat night, st George hotel has a club on a sat night and a nice terrace for summer drinks. In sidi yahir at the top of the road where mango spring field there is a nice cafe/rest it has WiFi and a mix of modern people its called duplex. In the summer it gets loads better as pools open. Good luck :-)
Algeria: Importing to Algiers - Ideas for Products:
All things I missed too! Is oatmeal the same as porridge oats? U can get Quaker oats in the superette in sidi yahir 190 dinar for a tub. Also found soy sauce in uno and galaxy and peanut butter once in uno but not the greatest so I would say these things too for us expats. Nice tinned soups, baked beans, tinned spagettie hoops gravy granuals, would go down with the mums I know for tea time for kids. Crackers and healthy oat bars are almost impossible to find. Know cured meats and cheeses are popular but choice limited also no decent fruit cordials. Hubby ran restaurant and he could not find syrups for coffees. So many things :)
Algeria: moving to algeria tomorrow, any last minute advice?:
Hi Carla sorry for delay to your other mess not sure why you only got half of it. As you speak Arabic you are at such a great advantage! I lived there on a off for last 3 years, I hated it at first then now I miss it! Get a routien sorted as soon as possible, join a gym...you will meet friends there, be brave and drive as soon as you can too. There is a nice area called sidi yahir nice place for coffee/ lunch at weekend or meet up with friends few nice clothes shops too. Summer is great, swimming pools open at end of may in general. I know that a lot of people go swimming and play tennis but you will get frustrated with the limits on things to do but you have to make the most of what is there! Its getting better all the time. If you need any info/support message me. Good luck! :-)
Algeria: Moving to Algeria:
Hi Carla, hydra and Ben aknoun are two of the nicest places to live but it is expensive but U will be amounst other forginers. There are some lovely restaurants in these areas inc a French gastronomic rest called duplex in sidi yahir, but most people know area as paradou U will finds lovely park at the top of this road too its a great place for running and safe on ur own. I don't know where U have been living before? Do U have family in Algeria? I have a friend that has a lovely school in dely brahim called halo languages I can send U the email address if you like. The school is small but with a modern open approach.
Algeria: Any thoughts on this?:
Hello,
Set up on your own! What is the point in working for someone else, you can do that anywhere. If you want a nice standard of living here you have to have your own business or you will be working all sorts of hours and not even covering the rent for a semi decent place let alone have money left to fund travel else where. If you set up in your hubbys home town you will get support from family and friends, word of mouth is a powerfull thing here! You will have a success! Good luck! x
Algeria: passport information:
Congratulations on your baby! I would do as has been suggested. You know in algeria how everything works and its so hard to get an algerian passport here for children born elsewhere like UK ... we gave up getting my daughter an algerian passport from here. I have been told its easier to do it from the uk embassy. If all your paperwork is in order then you will need to get the birth registered with the enbassy in UK to get your family book and childs algerian birth certificate, they will not give this to you here if they are not born here. I know you need support when you first have a baby and be near your family. I hope that you have a visa to come back to th uk after your trip here, if you dont ... do not leave as they wont let you come back to the uk even if you child has uk passport.. we made this mistake with my husband. There are not baby groups here or sure start centres offering support but I am sure if you have a nice family and a little mone saved you will be fine. If you want to send me a private message with your email address I can chat more with you if you would like? I am staying in algiers at the moment but hop to go back to uk next year :) xx
Algeria: residence for algeria:
Hi, yes like Jenny said it should not be that difficult for you to get residency here in algeria. I know that you need to be issued wth a family visa from the algerian embassy in the US and travel here on that, ( I needed this from the embassy in the uk) if you just have a tourist visa then you can not get residency on that type of visa. Call and speak to the algerian embassy in your country and find out exactly what documents you need to get your family visa, usually its a bank statement, marriage certifiate , your husbands birth certificate a letter of accomodation from the local town hall in your husbands home town and I am sure there will be a few other things... they love paperwork! Hope you get this sorted soon I know its not nice to be apart from your husband :(
Algeria: algerian passport:
Hello,
I read your message and felt bad for you as you must be worried. As ur bf passport expired 4 years ago what document did he use to travel back to algeria with? They would not let him check in to a flight without a valid passport so that made me think that he might have used someone elses passport to travel with or maybe a forged document, if this is the case and he got caught with this upon his arrival to algeria then thats why he has been arreseted in algeria. He may have been wanted in another EU country and they had a warrent issue here in algeria for his arrest. I know lots of people have returned after being illegal in europe and they have not been arrested for this but lmaybe the law has changed recenlty. They would not arrest someone for having an out of date passport becuase its not a crime. He must have had another passport to leave england??? Do you know any of his friends in ur country that you know are nice people? You could ask them what has happend, ask them to call his family and translate for you. I think they are right you cant have telephone calls in jail here. I hope you hear from him soon inshalla
