Hello! First of all, there are only a few situations that entitle you to get a permanent residency visa in Brazil. You will need this visa to be able to work, have a bank account, etc. You may get it in the following cases: by marrying a Brazilian national or being in a proven stable union with a Brazilian national (this is new and has been included in the new Brazilian civil code); if you are the parent of a child born in Brazil even if both parents are foreign; in the case of family reunion; via an investor's or a retirement visa; if you are hired by a company that is prepared to give you a work contract. I would advise you to contact the Brazilian Consulate in your region regarding both the permanent residency visa and your career and degree. Working in Brazil on a foreign degree is not allowed unless you can have your diploma ratified by the relevant Brazilian authority. Hello! At last a coherent, resentment-free post. It is exactly that. There are lots of foreign winners in Brazil. I hate it when people try to convince others that the country is not good just because things went wrong for them. There is no perfect country. There is no perfect nothing really. In order to be successful in another country you must be good "emigrating material". If you choose to leave your own country, you must have very good reasons to do so whatever they are and this is an extremely personal factor. When you leave a place you must know that the next place will not be the same. None is. The worst enemy of an immigrant is comparing everything in the new place to what things were like in the old place. There are good and bad thing everywhere. We must choose the place that suits us best. There is no place on earth where everything is good or everything is bad. This is very subjective and personal. The most important thing is to do your homework thoroughly, see the place for yourself and decide. And as BrazilD says, talk to the winners. The losers never got anywhere and want to drag you down with them, Brazil is a great country that offers opportunities for everyone. Are there problems? Yes, like anywhere else. Choose your destination right and you will be fine. Mingle with the right people. A good professional (and especially and most probably, one of a kind here) is welcome everywhere. You will be fine! Pensadenos, I'm afraid I must disagree with your comments regarding Brazil in this case. I have lived in Brazil for 40 years so I have seen a lot. Also, I am a translator and interpreter and a Lic. Real Estate Broker and I offer settling-in services to foreign companies and individuals coming to "set up camp" in this country. Therefore, I deal with situations like Dod37's all the time. Getting a retirement visa in Brazil is not difficult. It just follows procedure as in any other country...a retirement visa or any other type of permanent residency visa for that matter. If not try it in the USA or the UK to see what difficult really is. Also, please keep in mind that all cases are unique and someone's bad experience or perspective rarely applies to other people. Dod37, I can recommend a lawyer who specialises in permanent residency visas and other foreign national matters and is a true "problem solver" in case you have one which I doubt. He speaks English and has done an excellent job every time I have referred a client to him. Hello! You could come to Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, a beautiful, safe island in southern Brazil where the period of time between November and April has the best weather you can think of. People here do not use fireworks on a daily basis....only when there is a football game and only before the match starts or when they score a goal. Also, you do not necessarily have to live near a stadium. Then you get fireworks at Christmas and New Year's Eve. And that's about it. We, animal defenders, have been working hard to stop fireworks altogether because dogs suffer a lot with all the racket and they run away and get lost or have bad accidents.
