Does anyone know of any Fourth of July shindigs going on for next week? I am American, have two kids who are half American half German and would love to share this celebration with them...
Thanks!
Germany: Moving to Karlsruhe/Heidelberg Area:
Where, exactly, are you going to be? I can give you info about playgroups and teaching, etc. etc. in Heidelberg but am not so familiar with what's out there in Karlsruhe...
Germany: Playgroups Speyer/Mannheim area:
Hi,
I'm renewing my call for families of young children to form an English speaking playgroup. I am an American married to a German with a 16 month old daughter who is picking up German with lightening speed. I'm NOT complaining, but must redouble my efforts to keep up with the English. Please contact me at diehl@englishtraining.net if interested!
Germany: Moving To Frankfurt in April....need english speakers with families for chat and company.:
Please see post from Dec. 27 "New to Frankfurt". The person who replied provided some very helpful web addresses.
Frankfurt seems to have a GREAT expat community--wish I lived closer.
Have fun-

Germany: SUPERBOWL!:
Hi,
I know this is a long shot, but are there any other rabid Pittsburgh Steeler fans in the Heidelberg/ Mannheim area planning on watching the great Black and Gold win their fifth Superbowl? Does anyone know where it is being shown in the area? No fun to watch alone...
Germany: Boy Scouts or similar organizations?:
Hi--
Does anyone know if the Boy SCouts exist in Germany, and if not, if there is a similar-type organization?
Thanks!
Germany: Cellphones and health insurance:
Dear nyc2mainz,
Thanks for reminding me of one of the BIG reasons I stay in Germany--the requirement that all citizens have health insurance. Unlike in the US, Germany feels a big responsibility to its citizens to keep them healthy and would find it unconscionable (and illegal) for even one person to be uncovered. Can you get some sort of private coverage in the US, if for no other reason than to get the "Schein"? I don't know how else you would do it.
The cell phone ("Handy" here in Germany!) issue seems entirely secondary if they won't let you in without the insurance, so I wouldn't be sweating that one too much yet. Many people here have handys as their only phone, with no landline at all. To avoid getting ripped off, we order ours online from the sites of the various providers. Compare their offers at your leisure and order a plan that is best for you. Popular providers here are O2, e-Plus, T- Mobile, Vodafon, among others
Germany: Giving Birth:
I gave birth in March at a women's clinic in Heidelberg, and had no problem getting my epidural "renewed". I don't know what I would have done without it--my baby was 9 pounds, and I'm not a big lady. The midwife there assured me that it was not their role to fight against the mother's wishes. That garbage they gave you about bonding with the child through unnecessary labor pain is exactly that--garbage. At my hospital, they allowed me and baby to bond by instantly placing her on my chest--before even cleaning her off. And by the way, I pushed for a total of 75 minutes and felt the contractions--just not the pain.
So, my advice is, DEFINITELY look for a different hospital next time. I'm not sure where you're located, but shop around and ask these questions ahead of time.
Germany: Baby/ mothers group in Mannheim/ Heidelberg area?:
Hello,
I'm days away from having my first baby and am wondering if there are groups in the Mannheim/ Heidelberg area (I live in Speyer) for new mothers and their babies? Would enjoy the social contact as I have temporarily stopped working to focus on my new role...
Thanks!
