Ecuador: International Living Again:

You and several others have made good, valid points. I was already a traveler (still working) when I ran into the IL crowd. They don't just sell Ecuador, but just about EVERY country in central/south America. Mr. Curan's job is to search out the "special" real estate deals which he can then invite people to see and get their discounts (often pre-build options). I met him but don't know him personally. However, based on income from running these "tours" I very much doubt he's living on $500 anywhere in the world. No personal disrespect intended. I attended one seminar which showed me that: it's a franchise. Some folks are looking for a change but if often seems they are feeding peoples' fear of the future. I have already visited several countries only to find no matter what the level of expense, I don't fit in and don't want to live there. So I continue to visit countries and use the "possible retirement location" concept as an excuse to try someplace new but I'm not wedded to it. Caveat emptor.

Global Expat Forum: Chef looking to expand:

I live in the U.S. but have researched and "almost" worked overseas. Do plenty of research in your profession. Check out prof'l organizations and their publications. See if you can make some connections before trying to go and work. Don't get scammed into working for nothing. You might want to take it slow and check all regs in a particular country before moving on. Good luck!
