Brazil: Brasilian moving back to Brasil with American husband:
Three years ago I retired to Brasil under the exact same conditions you will. My wife is Brasilian and lived in the USA for 18 years. I keep my pension deposits in my bank in the USA and access my funds via ATM. $2000 will provide a comfortable life as long as you choose the right place to live. do your comparisons on Numbeo, com. Remember that the whole east cost of Brasil is beachfront, not just Rio.
Brazil: Junk silver, legal tender in air travel:
Brasil has one true religion, TAXATION! if you bring in silver it will be taxed on its value. If they think its worth more, you will pay more. It is better to play it safe and tell the truth about the silvers value. Here is a good article with links on the subject.

Brazil: Interview for retired people:
I am not European, I am however, American. I am a New Yorker and in my mid thirties I moved to Tennessee to prepare for retirement. I currently reside in Goiania Goias. This is not as sexy a choice as Rio or SP but it suits me just fine.
I will not be offended if you are not interested, Just trying to help.
Brazil: Buying Razors in Brazil:
Do you mean Straight Razors? Safety razors are sold on the shelf in both countries. Straight razors are not.
Brazil: symbolica:
You should buy a ticket (Round trip). Come to Brasil and stay a few months. Unless you are rich-you will need a job. Look for one. take the time to know your friend. DO NOT IN ANY WAY BUY ANYTHING OR SPEND/LOAN ANY MORE MONEY THAN IS NEEDED.
Sorry if you wanted to read that life is all roses and candy, but you would not be the first man to post how his life was ruined by "love" in Brasil.
Brazil: Black male interested in moving to brazil:
Brasil is very about who you know. Please don't get trapped into a waste of time like race. I will try to ask you relevant questions:
Do you speak Portuguese ?
Have you visited Brasil EXTENSIVELY?
Do you have means to support yourself independant of Brasil?
Do you know anyone here you can REALLY TRUST ?
Brasil is not the same as the USA or the UK when it comes to business, you will get taken advantage of and it will be on you.
Just go online now and do some research. Forget the bikinis, surf and sun. This is your life.
PS: others may try to make this a referendum on race. do not fall for it.
Brazil: Do I have to go to Brasil to change name?:
If you are still in the USA , GREAT! Get all your paperwork done at the embassy. You will need to be able to access documents that may only be found in the states. Give yourself PLENTY of time. Look online (Brasilian consulate) for the listings of documents, costs and procedures. The embassy may ask for different documents than listed, this is why you should do it all there. The last thing you should do is the visa. When I applied for it, they kept asking for my travel date, you have to have a ticket already bought. Then they kept delaying the process until the day of departure. I tell you this because you are used to the way business is conducted in the USA. Brasil is no way near as efficient nor do they seem to care to be. So lower your expectations and prepare to be underwhelmed.
Brazil: Moving Personal Belongings to Brazil:
I am so sorry for your bad experience. I had similiar expences in my move. I also find it irksome that bribes are part of the process. That said, my advice is BRING EVERYTHING. I am a tall man I need comfort in all things. Furniture here are made for munchkins and IF you can find them in a size you are used to-IT WILL COST YOU.
Note: A clothes dryer that works in an apartment or camper will be good.
Brazil: 100% disabled vet want to stay in brazil:
I retired here 2 years ago and the move went smoothly. This only was possible because I KNEW what I was getting into.
Let me ask you these questions:
1-do you speak the language?
2-how many times have you stayed here?
3-do you have a LONG TERM friend here to guide you?
Brasil is NOT THE USA. Your inexperience WILL be taken advantage of.
So a word or two in your ear.
Leave your money in the USA accessed via ATM as you need it until you are comfortable with the moves you want to make long term.
If you have NOT spent time learning about LIVING in Brasil,,DO NOT commit yourself financially or emotionally based on what you see in Rio on a vacation.
You are ex military, do your recon.
At the very least turn around the next time you are on Copa beach, SEE the favelas? It is this contrast that is at the base of LIVING the reality here.
I have no business interest in offering my advice. If you want to contact me directly reply to this post and we can work that out.
