Uruguay: Vets & Stuff:

Cliff - Could not spend time down there, as we are moving with looking for farmland in the North... I heard there is everything there for pets, but will look... Perhaps if you go to SociedadSouthron.com & talk to Sara or Clara or Syd, who lives in the Atlantida area, they will better be able to help you... Lots of vet stuff around. Look me up if you visit Punta del Diablo or the Chuy area... We have an excellent dentist & great doctor as well! Luck & cheers, FG

Uruguay: friends needed in uruguay :):

Dear Robin - Please contact me at FlyingGoat628 at yahoo dot com. There is so much to tell you about UY & PDD in particular. First of all, there's no work to be had on any fishing boats... Family only & once you got a good look at them & the way they're built, with no radio onboard, etc., you will change your mind rather quickly, I think. However, if you are crafty, as I am & can make things like soaps, scarves, bracelets, macrame or crochet, then you can make a nice living down here in summer... Diablo Tranquilo offers free accommodation/food in exchange for work during high season (Dec-Mar). We are in process of buying farm land nearby for our goat & llama breeding operation. If we hit it off, you might decide to be part of that project, as spinning & weaving & cheesemaking are on the agenda. There are no other dairy goats up here. Much you need to know about PDD before making the journey if you don't want to end up broke... Please contact me at the Yahoo site & I will happily tell you more about this lovely spiritual heaven by the sea... Including the best buses in-country & the cheapest airfares, etc... Hostels are not a great idea - many people get ripped off there. When you have very little, everything you have is precious. Altho there is very little to no crime outside the big city of Montevideo, you find occasional petty thievery. However, yesterday we got our supper of mussels & sea whelks from Rivera Beach & left our little VW parked & unlocked for several hours. It was unmolested, as the locals here are learning who the car belongs to... ;p Please holler me up at the other email site & I'll be glad to give you the full skinny on this place. I can also get you in with my landlord, a wonderful guy, who has rooms of all sizes & prices. We have an entire little house with bath, full kitchen & fireplace (essential, as it is winter here), for just $300/mo. Cheers, Melanie Cady Punta del Diablo FlyingGoat628@yahoo.com

Uruguay: Ecuador or Uraguay or Thailand?:

Dear Dave - My name is Melanie, Mel for short, and I'm living in Punta del Diablo, Uruguay. I've lived/worked in Ecuador & can tell you it's not what you read about in these types of publications. I also lived in Thailand (Isan region, 60km from Cambodian border), but traveled all over. You do NOT want to go there. We fled Thailand after the coup in September 2006 & they were killing non-Asians in the countryside... If you are male & non-Asian, Thailand can be a VERY dangerous place to be. It seems the Thai ladies now seek out expats & imports rather than have a Thai husband... This understandably creates quite a lot of resentment on the part of the Thai men... Mixed blood children are not kindly looked upon. You must be over 50 to be eligible to spend more than 60 days a year there. I have a German friend married to a Thai lady with family, home, etc. - a tragic tale if you care to hear it. Interestingly, I've also lived in Oz, your home country. I spent quite a bit of time on a sheep station in outback Victoria (Talopea Downs), as well as working on a dairy in Tassie... I have finally found the home I've been searching for - here in Punta del Diablo, Uruguay. I cannot say enough good things about the country. There is Free WiFi in all towns & squares. Once you get a house, have Antel (like Telstra) run a landline to your home & pay a ONE TIME FEE of 500 pesos ($20 US) & you have LIFETIME fast broadband, 10gbs. If you pay 750 or 1000 pesos, you get ultrafast speed. Renewing visas is easy. Go to the Direccion Nacional de Migration, take a number, when your number comes up on the screen, just go to the desk indicated & show your docs. Then you go to the cashier & pay $20US, picking up your freshly printed & embossed Visa on the way out (saves passport pages, too). I would love to tell you more about Uruguay & why we've decided to settle here... Why, if you have modest funding, as we do, you should NOT choose PDE, but go further up the coast. You can reach me most easily at FlyingGoat628@yahoo.com. I will be happy to give you heaps of info, as we are now in the process of buying farmland for our goat & llama breeding operation... :D We could certainly use a coupla Aussies here for local color & flavor! Fair dinkum, mate! ;p Cheers, Melanie Cady (Mel) Punta del Diablo Rocha, Uruguay Phone - country code (598) 098 143 607

Uruguay: Anyone in Punta del Diablo?:

Hubs & I have decided to spend a few months in Punta del Diablo to chill out from recent stresses & let the salt sea air heal our lung issues (think BP's spill in GOM - bad air, contaminated environment)... Anyone there who can tell me about the current status of ATM availability & what stores are available? We are renting a cabin & want to prepare our own meals. Are the spices & herbs we have in the US available in PDD? What items should we buy in MVD before heading north?

Uruguay: Dental Care:

I can recommend Dr. Mario Garcia, Odontologo, without reservation! He has offices in Montevideo at Cubo del Sur 3718, phone: 2506-3752, or cell phone: 099 179 234. (For those outside Uruguay, the country code is 598.) His Email address is: mariodontologo@hotmail.com. He travels back & forth from Montevideo to Punta del Diablo, where he maintains a fantastic office at Arq. A. Baldomir y S. Bolivar (just turn left at the Consultorio Odontologo sign, go to the top of the hill, turn right at the yellow house & park in front of the house with the sign, "Dentista.") Mario is an excellent dentist who is also an oral surgeon & specializes in dental implants. He also does repair work for TMJ (temporomandibular joint) issues. Everyone in the Punta del Diablo community loves him. This doctor is FANTASTIC! I was in great pain with a broken molar & wanted it pulled (it had been cracked for 18 years & a back corner finally gave way & broke off). I had put it off not wanting silver/mercury amalgam fillings and/or root canal. Dr. Mario explained that he could repair it, why I did NOT need a root canal, and why dentists here use a porcelain composite instead of silver/mercury amalgam fillings. He informed me that NO DENTIST here uses that poisonous stuff. Best of all, I had 4 appointments of one hour each, had my x-rays done in Chuy for $7.50, and the total cost for Mario's work was only $40 USD... My tooth is like brand new, with zero pain, looks beautiful (a bit younger than my others), and my bite has not changed at all. I am a very happy customer & no longer afraid of the dentist... So happy, in fact, that we are considering bringing our daughter down to have her silver amalgam fillings removed & replaced with the new composite. This work would run well over $20k in the US but we can probably do it here for much less, as you see by my story above. If you have any type of dental issues or just need a simple cleaning (with the advanced ultrasonic scaling technique - no pain, no scraping), be sure to ring him for an appointment. You will be very glad you did. I sure am! Tell him Mel sent you! :D
