Japan: Word of Caution about Hikari TV:
I just moved from Mitaka to Chofu in the Tokyo 'burbs. I had the chance to get fiber optic internet service with 100+ mbps, so was pretty excited as I'm a hardcore techie. With that package, fiber optic TV was available at a good price too through Hikari TV.
They came, they saw, they installed. My fiber optic TV was up and running, so I sit down to enjoy some of my favorite programming on the vast array of Discovery stations. What? No Discovery stations are carried by Hikari TV? It was a somber moment when I realized that all of my documentary viewing was going to be limited to History Channel and National Geographic. Apparently, Hikari and Discovery Networks had a dispute last year, so they have dropped all of the Discovery channels.
Figured it would be a good thing to know in advance in case anyone is considering signing up for their service.
Japan: Looking for Employment in Japan:
The English teaching market is quickly drying up in Japan. With Geos now bankrupt this year, that makes two of the largest schools in the country.
Even if it was possible to get a teaching job and visa without a bachelors degree, it'd still be for a pretty paltry amount of money. Without fluent Japanese language skills, it would be about impossible to get a job doing anything except teaching English.
I hate to paint such a bleak picture, but better to hear it before you arrive, than learn it the hard way after arrival.
