Nepal: Need advice asap:

This all depends on where you are coming from and nationality. The reality is you can't just get a job here unless you are a Nepalese or Indian citizen. There are ways to get a job here but there is a process of approval and public notification. For example if I own an institute teaching English it is possible but very difficult to hire an American as my English teacher. This is because there are many English speaking Nepalese who could do the job making the need for the American teacher unfounded. Nepalese and Indian citizens are free to work and do as they choose. If you are close to Nepal and travel is not expensive then coming to Nepal in person is easier. Nepal is country of relationships. Its all about who you know. Wages in Nepal are low while house/flat rent is increasing rapidly. This has created an imbalance and therefore a housing crisis that will continue to grow. Don't expect wages to be very high. Depending on where you are from the standard of living could be much lower than you are use to. People from developed countries have difficulty adjusting to the garbage and pollution. Most find it a frustration shopping in local markets but you will get use to that over time. Taxis are a constant negative for Nepal. Taxis have improved recently but still over charge most of the time. This is one of the most common complaints by foreigners about Nepal. One quote I always keep in mind is "nothing is easy in Nepal" There are good points about Nepal. Violent crime against foreigners is very rare (theft and fraud are more common). In general the people of Nepal are kind. They are not overly helpful without pay but for daily encounters they are good. You can walk in most areas at any hour and not be harassed (men) . As in most countries a women should not walk alone at odd hours even though I have many female friends who do walk alone at night and have never had trouble. I always tell people to visit for at least a few months before moving to Nepal. After the newness wears off many change their mind and return home. I have met hundreds of foreigners who were here 20+ years ago and return remembering something that has changed completely. These people always return home after the 150 day tourist visa. People who successfully stay in Nepal are here for a reason. They must have a purpose or all the difficulties outweigh the reason someone is here. I have been here for 6 years and have two businesses. Doing business is a challenge in Nepal with their outdated expensive tax codes and not having a simple process for filing or paying taxes. Corruption is commonplace and something you have to learn how to deal with. This is far from an easy country but it has its rewards. Contact me privately if you have any other questions. :)

Nepal: Expat Visa(s):

Resident visas in Nepal are only for people who have family who are Nepalese . I have been in Nepal for 6 years and visa is always an issue. Send me a pm and I can explain how it works here. The visa system is very frustrating in Nepal .

Nepal: apply for refugee in UNHCR:

The friends I have in Nepal who are Samali refugees all went directly to the UNHCR office to get registered and received a UNHCR id card. This does not mean it is free. They are charged the daily fee of $5 for staying in Nepal with no visa. This government fee is difficult for them to pay so many have been trapped in Nepal not able to exit even when they have approval for the next country.

Nepal: Starting a Small Business:

I have two businesses in Nepal and have not heard this was reduced. It was 20k when I opened both of mine but has been at 50k for a while. My lawyer is one who is fighting this to be lowered but even he said it would not go back to 20k. I doubt that has happened. If you have any more questions about starting a business in Nepal feel free to contact me. It is a frustrating adventure but can be done. Use a good lawyer for sure

Nepal: Nepali translation help:

It means. Let's go let's go. Lol. They often say it twice. I use that phrase a lot here

Nepal: Nepal Salary:

$1900 is a big salary here. Ask about the hours and schedule . Many job have long hours and work six days a week. That could pay for a very nice life style. Easily. Pm me if you want. I moved here in 2010 from Oregon

Nepal: moving from milwaukee, wisconsin to pokhara nepal:

I moved to Nepal in 2010. There is a lot to ask before I can give any advice. What do you want to do in Nepal? How long do you want to stay ? What kind of budget are you on ? PM and we can go over some options.

Nepal: Getting mail in Nepal:

If you are going to stay in Nepal for a while you can set up a PO box. These are the best because if you get a package they will put a slip in the box telling you to go to the other building to pick it up. Regular mail will be in the PO box. The process at the post office is long and frustrating. Always have your passport and a photo copy of your passport with you. I like to count the number of places I am sent. So far the record is 17 different places for signatures, paying tax, picking up the box, inspection of the box etc. Just remember some things like cameras/phones are not allowed to be sent to Nepal without an import lic. Sending packages out of Nepal is expensive. Mail like letters or post cards are not expensive but can take over a month to get to the states. Other locations will no doubt be faster. I have been here for 5 years and one of the worst things I hate the most is going to the post office.

Nepal: mattrass:

I have lived in Kathmandu for 4 years. Foam is easy to buy. There are many shops that sell different thicknesses and quality. Just buy a few pieces cut them to fit what every you want then go to a tailor and have a cover made. My first bed was a foam bed I made. It cost about 2000rs or about $20 US plus the cover which was about $8 US. Make sure your cover is over sized by a few inches because the cotton bed sheet like material is low quality and shrinks after washing. Also make sure it is removable. Usually they have short strings so you tie one end shut after folding the foam and sliding the cover on. Not difficult. Taxes I can't help you on. I have a business here and pay taxes but not lucky enough to be retired. I sleep in a pillow top mattress and love it. Costs about $350 48x72 inch 10 inch thick Spring Fit brand. Also easy to get if you want to spend the money. Its an odd size you will need to have sheets made. No fitted sheets available in Nepal.

Nepal: Looking For a reliable source for short/long term apartment in:

What area of Nepal? Depending on what you plan to do here the area even within Kathmandu can be very important and change the rent amount. Internet is very cheap in Nepal. If you are renting some places it may come with it but even getting your own account is not expensive monthly but they do have start up costs. I use 512kbps and it works fine for most things. Yes it is very slow compared to western countries but it does work ok. Youtube etc do work. Skype is no problem. I use classic Tech and its ok but throttled. How long will you be in Nepal? This may change what you want to spend to setup an apartment, flat, or house. I prefer renting houses not flats. More privacy and security. A local house to rent will cost less than your budget unless you want to get fancy. Houses and flats here come with nothing so be ready to buy carpet and many other things you may think should come with a flat or house.
