Uruguay: URUGUAY NOT SO ISOLATED ANYMORE:
For those of you who selected UY based on the remoteness from all the world problems in case of disputes or wars be aware that the US president is in Argentina dancing the Tango and making deals. Also Argentina recently blew out of the water a Chinese fishing boat and a few years back ensued a naval battle with Britain over the Malvinas (Falkland islands). I believe your part of the world has been discovered and you are a priority in the world radar now with Obama Dancing tango there. LOL
Uruguay: Punta Del Este - Dentist:
You have received the best answers from Morell and Focus I just wanted to add a key piece of info. People go outside of US to get cheaper dental work and as long as its cavities, cleaning, bridges and crowns you are ok with a dentist.
Implants are done by Periodontist but since its not regulated many dentist in the US after a weekend seminar in Vegas have begun the practice of placing these to make more money.
Its a risky and complicated procedure and for some it will not take and sometimes infections ensue. Periodontist go 2 years additional training and are also surgeons specializing in the gums.
I had one done and it turned out after using a 3D xray machine (latest tool) that I needed what is called a sinus lift and a shorter implant with bone grafting. Trust me you don't want a dentist to attempt this.
I strongly recommend you do it in the US and after your trip or before to allow enough re-coup time to ensure all is well. Good luck.
Uruguay: new member:
The advise you have received agrees with what i have read. I do find it curious that you having lived for 10 years next door to UY are not more aware of costs there.
Uruguay: supplements:
Be careful with those product and herbs sold by Santeria practitioners they are not tested by anyone and can be contaminated getting you very sick!
Uruguay: It Begins: My First Trip to Uruguay:

Uruguay: Further chapter to: Steps to buying an apartment:
Why would you want to buy into this problem? Dampness sound like sure future Mold problems and major health exposure.
If I were you I would find another place.
Uruguay: WW3?:

>I could stay here in northern va paying 2000 a month for rent...<
>so I would like to hear from ppl who know what its like to just live without all the xtras thank you<
I find the above unusual asking to hear from people that know how to live frugally. I don't know what neighborhood you live in but I believe I live middle middle class in the middle of a small US city in a 5 br 3 bath 1800 sq feet home with central A/C washer/ dryer/ diswasher / 30 gals water heater/ microwave/hood /garbage disposal/water filter and ceramic range and only pay $1600/mo rent and can walk to the beach 7 blocks away. My friend and his wife and child live in a 2 BR apt. and pay only $750/mo and he does not live frugally.
So if you are looking to move just to drop your cost of living you may just need to move to a different state not country and UY as Morell posted is the most expensive country in SA.
Uruguay: Healthcare in smaller centres:
Those are the advantages of a third world country. I'm sure you knew this when you moved. No surprises here.
Imagine if you had a stroke or a heart attack where time is of the essence.
Good post. People need to think about these things.
