Advice for New Expats

Where ever you dream of living, spend considerable time visiting before you actually move. If you are thinking of marrying a citizen of that country, invest plenty of time getting to know her and her family first - just like you would at home. An ancient Jewish proverb councils, "Marry in haste, repent at leisure."

Philippines: protests:

Trappedinhell, from where I sit, your characterization of how the current situation in the Philippines is portrayed is significantly overstated. I'm sure the media powers-that-be aren't soft-balling stories about Du30 in California because they're afraid of offending me and my Filipina.

Ace, your suggestion of giving a 1% reward is a wise on several levels. Thanks. Sometimes wisdom seems in short supply around here.

Philippines: Town house to let, Cebu:

Spruce, Filipino's speak "English" like we do. The meaning of particular terms vary from culture to culture. Brits often haven't a clue when asked "Where's the bathroom?" Some respond, "Oh, you mean the loo", or even "Yes, the water closet is over there." We don't own the English language, we just borrow it from our cousins across the pond. Some of us think of it as our own. But that's our problem. Others are under no obligation to use the same nomenclature as we do. Buck up, it's not that bad. The women are cute and at least half of the children are above average.

Philippines: Property Taxes:

Regarding not paying propriety taxes. We have sold one property and have several others on the market. My wife tells me that property taxes can be allowed to accrue for years, even decades, but must be paid before title can be passed on to a new owner.

Philippines: Medicle Insurance:

Blue Cross Philippines, not associated with BC USA, seems a good one. However, rates rise sharply after 65 and do not cover previously existing conditions. They have both dollar and peso plans at several levels of coverage. The 'previous condition' caveat leaves most of us retirees out in the cold because it refers to conditions which existed before the policy is signed WHETHER OR NOT THEY WERE KNOWN. That exemption covers a lot of territory. Think cardiac conditions and cancer.
