Wow, I just noticed this is a really old post. I wonder if you made it to South Africa yet? I am an American, living and working in Cape Town. I recently wrote a letter to a person who asked the very same question - there are pros and cons, like anything. Your best bet is to come here and live, meet people and interview. But it will be difficult to get a break. Better yet is if you can qualify for the exceptional skills visa - that makes things a lot easier.
