Bahamas: Giving birth in the Bahamas:

Hi Charlotte My wife had our first baby in the Bahamas at Doctor's Hospital. It went very well and we were happy with the treatment. You will need private insurance though otherwise the cost will be in the region of $8-$10k for a natural birth and quite a bit more for a caesarian. We have heard that the Princess Margaret Hospital (public hospital) is good for childbirth but it is very busy and you could be sharing a room with up to 10 others. Also they are pretty quick to do a caesarian, about 90% of women give birth that way due to high traffic. As far as Obstetricians go, if you will be living out west you can contact Laura Dupuch or out east her husband Leon. Just google the names and you'll find their contacts. You can also call them if you want any specific information. I'm not sure about the passport for your baby if you need urgent care, probably contact the USA directly to find out that information.

Bahamas: work permits:

Yes, anyone that is not Bahamian needs a work permit

Bahamas: 4 Bedroom Townhouse Available for rent:

I'm going to be renting out our 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom townhouse in the Balmoral community, $4500 per month and can be discounted for longer term rental. It's a beautiful, safe and secure development that is located just near Cable Beach/Goodman's Bay. It takes about 20 minutes maximum drive (out of rush hour) to get almost anywhere on the island, downtown is 10 minutes, airport 12 minutes, Paradise island about 15 minutes. You can view all the details here: http://www.balmoralrental.com Please get in touch if you have any questions Steve

Bahamas: Need a Car in the Bahamas:

Try Execuitive Motors http://executivemotorspreowned.com/ or Sanpin http://preownedbahamas.com/

Bahamas: Looking for Mommy and baby/toddler play groups, events and activities:

There are a few groups for Moms with young kids. 1) On Tuesday mornings there is an art class at the New Providence Community Centre (in the west). I'm not sure what ages it goes from and to but our daughter has been going since before she was one and is now just over two. You can call them for more details. 2) There is a book reading for kids at Logos book store at the Harbour Bay shopping centre (east) on Wednesday mornings https://www.facebook.com/pages/Logos-Bookstore-Nassau-BAHAMAS/44709027540 3) Music morning at the New Providence Community centre on Thursdays, morning and afternoon. These are really good places to meet other moms and dads and many form up for playdates based on age and area where they live If you're looking to meet people and you're not a parent then try joining groups where you have an interest, like sports or culture etc. There are not many pure expat groups as such, people tend to just meet for activities, at events and then get together socially once they have established a connection. Volunteering is another way. The Humane Society for instance is a great place to meet people, they have quite a few events and once you are involved you see many of the same people frequently. I'm sure there are lots of other opportunities for volunteering too.

Bahamas: Import tax???:

Hi Lucy. If you are moving your household items then yes, you will be charged import duty. You are advised to bring all your receipts so that you can prove the value, otherwise customs will allocate a value for you and it's not always in your favour. You can see the import prices here: http://goo.gl/Yhlf5o

Bahamas: Moving To The Bahamas:

In terms of the visa, if you are from the States, Canada, some European countries or UK you are allowed to stay for up to 8 months without a visa but you will most likely be given a one month on entry and then have to renew it every month by going to the immigration department on Hawkins Hill. You will need a valid passport.

Bahamas: Moving from US to Bahamas:

You'll need to provide some more details to get an answer. Are you buying a house, coming to work, retiring etc. Doesn't sound like you've done too much research if you don't know which island you're moving to yet...

Bahamas: Postage from the US:

It depends on the size and weight of the items. If it's something that's only a few pounds in weight I would use Tropix Air. It's way cheaper than a courier and they fly it in so takes about a week or less to get the items once they arrive at the Tropix offices in Miami. The costs are as follows: $10 for processing, $10 for the Bahamas Stamp duty and then you are charged the freight which is about $1.50 per pound Plus a charge for the size of the box. Then the regular import duties on top of that. Typically I end up paying about $35 excluding the import duties. Call Tropix to find out the address you need to have Amazon send it to and then you just farward them your invoice so they can work out the import duties. If you know the size and weight of the parcel then Tropix can give you a quote on that too. http://www.bahamaslocal.com/showlisting/12611/Tropix_Air_Ltd.html For larger items you can use Betty K as someone already suggested. You'll need a clearing agent, try http://www.arawakimports.com, if you call them up and know the size and weight they can get you a quote and will also explain the process.
