Saudi Arabia: Employers holding passport:
This used to be standard practice. it is no longer required by law but many employers still do this. We have always kept our own passports and it has never ben an issue with three different employers.
Saudi Arabia: BLACK AMERICAN TEACHER SEEKS PROFESSIONAL BLACK SAUDI WIFE:
Dear Sir, you are probably looking in the wrong place, as this forum is mainly used by expats. Good luck in your search. Also, you should be aware that Saudis require permission to marry non-Saudis, which may prove an obstacle.
Saudi Arabia: Camping in KSA:
We have done a lot of camping here, as well. Once we had the secret police show up and tell us that we shouldn't camp in a specific place because it wasn't safe. Another place we camped they set up a patrol nearby. I suspect a couple other times they were nearby but didn't introduce themselves. In 12 years here, with a lot of camping trips we have never had any problems. Enjoy.
Saudi Arabia: I need Bikes:
One thing you'll find living here is that because people are constantly leaving, you should be able to find this kind of thing quite easily. If you are living on a compound ask around. When people have garage sales go early, because the maids do very well at them. If you are not on a compound, ask the other mums at the school when you are dropping the kids off. I'm not sure if there's a buy and sell for small items, but I know that when we were looking for dirt bikes/quads there was a site that had used items for sale but I can't remember what it was called.
Saudi Arabia: visa requirement:
Once your husband has his visa, you can expect a minimum of six weeks until you and your children are able to join him. If anyone tells you something shorter they are probably being overly optimistic.
Saudi Arabia: Moving to Jeddah:
Jeddah is a great city ... more relaxed than Riyadh or Dammam. Compound life is very easy going, and you have the advantage of being on the Red Sea, so can enjoy the beach as well. Which compound is best depends on what you're looking for, if you have children, etc. Good luck.
Saudi Arabia: Dogs in Riyadh:
You will find a lot of dogs on western compounds in Riyadh, that shouldn't be such a big issue. With three large dogs, though, you will probably want a bigger house, and availability can be an issue. I can't recommend any specific compounds. Clearly walking at a fast pace for an hour you will be doing circles on most compounds and get bored quite quickly.
Not sure where in the city you could exercise them, aside from the compounds. There are areas where Saudis go to walk for exercise, but I imagine three large dogs would make people uncomfortable.
There are lots of desert areas not far out of the city where you could probably let them have a run.
We have used Riyadh Veterinary Clinic (listed in Riyadh Today) and they seem professional and knowledgeable.
Saudi Arabia: I Wish I had Known... Before Moving to Saudi Arabia:
You can buy almost anything here. Don't go to huge personal expense shipping household items to Saudi, the choice here is overwhelming and the prices are often better than in your home country.
Saudi Arabia: Jeddah Int'l school:
The review mentioned above is for the American International School of Jeddah.
The three main international schools for expats are Jeddah Prep and Grammar School, The British International School of Jeddah and the American International School of Jeddah.
I don't know a lot about Jeddah International School. From what I understand, the students are mainly arab expats/Saudi. I think they have a lot of western staff ... it's probably worth sending an email.
Saudi Arabia: Shipping to Jeddah:
Four Winds is a popular mover at the Saudi side, not sure if your husband wants to check it out from here.
Be aware that containers often get held up for long periods in the port. Your belongings may be strewn all over the dock and fade in the sun for days during the process. Your belongings may arrive at the port intact, but then shoved back into the container haphazardly for the final delivery.
Any Christmas decorations, especially a tree, can really cause problems with the release of the entire container. They sometimes ask you to relinquish them in order to release the shipment. People do get them through, but it takes luck and/or persistence and if you're new to the country it may be one headache you don't want.
Good luck.
