Egypt: hello everyone :):

Hello Elvie, Your story is typical of foreign woman and Egyptian man. No news there. Here's the deal. I've been living and working in Egypt now for 2 years. I live with my bf and his parents. My advice: 1. think very very carefully before you even consider moving here to be with him. Life is not gonna be a bed of roses as you assume. 2. You have 2 kids....his family will never ever accept you ...never. 3. In his live you will always be last. Mother first, family second then friends and then you...no matter what he says to you now...remember my words as it is how it will be. 4. Egyptian men come and go as they please. You will be left alone at home while he goes out with his friends. He will come back whenever he wants to and you will have no right to ask him. 5. You cannot in Egypt live with a man if not legally married to him. It is against Islamic law and his family will not allow him to marry you. 6. Egyptians are great people his family may accept you as a friend and treat you very well indeed until you want to get married then it will be another story. You are not Muslim and you were married with 2 kids. Warning! Be careful consider your kids first. This is a strange country with strange customs and most women from the west cannot accept it. You are in for a rough ride and I feel sorry for you.Do not act in haste as your whole life will be ruined if you do. If this man loves you, then let him travel to you and marry you there before you come back to Egypt. Remember my words: HIS FAMILY WILL NOT ACCEPT A MARRIAGE BETWEEN THE TWO OF YOU...THEY WILL NOT.

Egypt: Studying and working in Alexandria:

Hi, I've been living and working in Alexandria for the past 14 months now. It is a great city to live in. The people are great, and very helpful. However, it does get pretty lonely at times. Remember this is an Arab country with totally different values and believe system [ and i am not talking about Islam here ] As a women you will have to change your western ways if you want to be accepted into the society. It is not easy, but once these guys accept you they will walk through fire with you. Yes, I agree you will be hit on from the moment you land here. I lost count of how many marriage proposals I had since I moved here. Some guys are straight forward and tell you it is a mere business transaction and others go the 'I love you ' route. The thing that still gets to me is the filth. Alex is a DIRTY city. Filth line the streets wherever you go. The smell of rotten food is everywhere. Women here do not take easily to western women. You will find that out when you start working. O, they smile and seem friendly, but to them all western women are 'easy' and sex addicts who want to steal their men. Having said all that.....it is a great country and I love living here. To me Alex is home and i would not want to live anywhere else. Anyway....Egypt is waiting for you so welcome :)

Egypt: marriage egyptian police officer and foreigner:

Magdy is correct. A marriage between you will not be allowed, unless he leaves the force. It will be best for you to move on yes. Am sorry for your hurt.

Egypt: Visa Extension:

HI, I live and work in Alexandria, and had such big problems getting my visa extended. Nobody at the offices here were willing to help. All they told me was that it will take up to one month to do, and you better have a very very good excuse to have it done. Eventually one lady said to me to go back to my country and get another visa!!! What incompetence! Anyway, I sent my passport to my country [ on her recommendation] It cost me 2500LE to courier it there and back. When I got it back after 5 days, I went to the office again and ...wait for it!!! ...then the manager told me...noooooooooooooo this now has no entry or departure stamp so means nothing!!! He then told me to forget it and just stay and work. I asked him what will happen if I decided to leave and have no valid visa to show on the airport , and he said that it will not be a problem as i will just have to pay the fee of about 150LE. That is Egypt for you..

Egypt: Adjustment Sickness In Egypt:

Hi, I've been living and working in Alex for the past year, but had been in Egypt every year prior to that for three months each time. I had never been ill although I drink the tap water. This time though, from last year December when I got here, I became very, very ill. It lasted for 6 months. At first I thought it was flu, but it continued and no antibiotics were effective at all. Eventually I got to a doctor and she told me that the problem for westeners was the decaying rubbish in the streets. She said our bodies does not have antibodies against the viruses that breeds and are then breathed in. Egyptians are used to it, but we are not, so we get ill. Very ill. I know I did. After 6 months I was fine, but it took a lot out of me. Just hang in there..it will get better.

Egypt: Foreign Owner rights?:

I am in law..yet not a registered lawyer. I can tell you this much....The law is on your side IF your papers are legit. I do not know where you are from but believe me...if you are from Europe or the States the police will fight amongst themselves for the right to help you just to avoid trouble coming from your embassy. You have nothing to worry about
