Canoa is dangerous, but decent surf. Montanita is best. Good people, lots of surfers and a fun area. Puerto Lopez, good location, but more for beginners-intermediates great place to hang and lots to do besides surf.

It is all relative to where you want to live. Out of big cities you can live well on 2K. However, rent in Quito in good area is expensive now. Cuenca $300-600 per mo rent. There are private ins. in EC you can contact for ins. If over 65 many do not cover you. If you are over 65 you can get on Soc. Sec medical for about $70 per month. Some privates are cheaper. But you must look around, especially if you have preexisting, because the govt. has been trying to crack down on the foreigners coming over with all their serious ailments. Hope this infor helps out. Has anyone actually tried to get on the Social Security plan??? It seems nearly impossible to find anyone at the Offices w.ho knows how to register you as an immigrant. If you have attempted to sign up, what is the secret???

It is true, you do not need to live here in Ecuador to open an account. Juan in Cuenca speaks good English and can fill you in on all the details. Just remember, it is easy to bring money into EC, but not as easy to get it out. There is now a 5% charge for taking money out of Ec. There is also a limited amount of insurance available to you thru Coopera about $400. however, that amount can cover a few things, dental, etc here in EC I live in Quito, and plan to later open an account in Cuenca. I am legally here. Hope this helps
