Egypt: Moving to Egypt:

Egypt: advice and an asprin please:):

Hello, Is it Ruthy? I couldn't tell as you didn't sign your email. Anyhow, I am also American and have been living here 3 1/2 years. Husband is also Egyptian. I am an occupational therapist and am the Head of the OT Department in a center for children located in Maadi (Cairo). We work with children who have special needs, i.e. learning disabilities, autism, down syndrome etc. Perhaps we may have a part time position for you at the center. You can send me your CV and call me when you get to Cairo. www.lrcegypt.org is the work website. My email is LME1169@yahoo.com. I would assume since you have visited 4 times that you know what you are getting yourself into by relocating to Egypt and marrying into an Egyptian family? As far as weddings here, it depends on what you want and what cultural traditions your husband has and wants for the wedding. Also depends on the religion, too. As in the states.....you can make it as simple or as complex as you want! On one extreme, you can have a nice simple dinner party for close friends and family and wear a wedding dress etc. and on teh other extreme, you can have a large wedding at a hotel...they are usually buffet style, dj, wedding dress, no wedding party/brides maids etc.... I would suggest getting your dress in the states and bringing it here. Anyhow, feel free to email me with any questions... Laura

Egypt: Moving to Cairo -- would you be a friend?:

Hello. I presently live in Cairo and my husband is Egyptian. Many of our friends would love to move to Canada and a few relatives and family have already. Do you realize what opportunities you have abroad? I know people who come to Cairo and say how they love the weather, laid back atmosphere and simplicity. Personally, unless you have a great job who is paying you as a foreigner life here is not easy. Visiting Cairo is much different then living here. Explore your options....and best of luck.

Egypt: newbie needs info relocating to cairo:

Hello....I have lived in Cairo 3 years and to answer some of your questions: 1.) You can get a driver's license as a foreigner and sometimes they wave the driving test and you just pay and do some paperwork for a few hours (this is what I did). Driving is difficult because people do not always drive in their lines, use blinkers etc. Parking is also tight. So, it depends on your personality and what you can handle. Everyone is different. I would suggest get your license and practice on slow traffic days...like friday. Otherwise, taxi's are reasonably priced. 2.) Maids/nanny's depend on what nationality/language level you are looking for and where you live. I know people who have Egyptian maids and nanny's for 500LE/month and others who have someone for double that. 3.) Strollers/prams depends on where you live. The sidewalks in general are very poor. I only see strollers used around Maadi where the streets are wider and the traffic less than other areas. 4.) Yes, there are some women only swimming facilities. Some pools also have a specific day for women only. I am not sure though which pools have this, but know from friends of mine. 5.) Heliopolis is a nice area...once again, depends on what you like. I would definitiely choose Heliopolis over Nasr city, though. Heliopolis is much greener and better structured. That rent amount should be fine for a nice 2 bedroom apartment. Hope this helps....

Egypt: Living in Cairo - to do or not to do?:

Hello...there are plenty of teaching opportunities, especially for a British certified teacher. Cairo American College (K-Primary) has a website....there is also the British International School (located in Zamelak, Cairo), Modern English School, Heliopolis American Intenational School and many more. I think all these should have websites. Teaching English as a second language is also available. Check out the British Council website, too...I have a friend that teachers English as a second language there. I work as an occupational therapist with disabled children...here under a year, so I am gradually learning about the schools here. My e-mail is LME1169@yahoo.com. I'll try and find you some more school contacts. Laura
