India: Leaving Family Behind:
Don't do it! The laws of India are completely in favor of men over woman or at least Indian fathers over non-Indian mothers. I lived in India for a short time and met a woman there (American) who's husband (Indian) wanted the same thing. After they got there they separated and now she is stuck in legal and emotional hell. In addition to the laws, the culture there is just overwhelming for expats. I've lived in many countries and the family is more important in India than anyplace I've lived and you will never get out from under his family. The cards are just too stacked against you as a foreigner, and to some extent a woman. Don't take my word for it - do some further research. And good luck! Karen
India: Risk of Malairia -UP:
Anyone have an idea of what the risk of Malaria to expats is in India? Came to Gorakhpur in UP to teach and took many precautions (Hep A and B vaccinations, polio/tetanus, pheumona, flu shots and more) but did not think Malaria was huge problem in that region. Now I see there are more mosquitos than I've ever seen!
Thanks. Please reply to:

Peru: ESL Teacher, Learn Spanish?:
I need to recharge my batteries and am looking to re-connect with some joys, such as eating great food, which Peru, and perhaps Lima in particular, has lots of. (At least Anthony Bourdain thinks so:-). I would rather not just come on a whim or "vacation", which I haven't done for years. I am an ESL teacher and would like teach (while I'm doing all that eating) and learn Spanish. Any thoughts/recommendations/suggestions? I would consider volunteering my teaching time...
Looking forward to hearing from someone, Best regards, Karen
Saudi Arabia: Single Woman Moving to KSA?:
I'm a single middle aged Californian considering a job in KSA. I have eyes wide open, lived in Tunisia. But I'd like to hear from Americans or other expats on the challenges I will face. I don't know where I will live yet, i.e., in a compound, etc., and I have been reading some of the messages here so I have ideas on the restrictions on freedoms... But I'm still listening and reading...would anyone like to comment?
