Ecuador Welcome Forum: Cuenca - Looking for furniture lumber:

Marinoni, I would recomend asking one of the owners of La Yunta resturant on Ave De Americas (hwy 35) between Cuenca and Tarqui. They sell handmade furniture in there and may have some info. and they all speak English and Spanish. They have helped us find things around Cuenca. The food is real good there also!

Ecuador: Disappointed in my findings about moving to Ecuador:

OOPS! somehow my computer posted my unfinished post!! Anyway, we moved to EC without setting foot here before and don't regret it one bit. We moved to Tennessee without ever going there so we figured what the heck.....the south was pretty forgein to us at that time. We came in with a 6 month Visa and going for our Cedula soon. We can get an extension if we have to. Renting is best if you get all utilities and phone and internet included because we were told it is not easy to get ulitities in your own name unless you have your cedula. We brought two large dogs so needed a fenced yard. The house we rent is 550.00 a month with utilities and internet. There are cheaper rentals if you get an apartment or smaller house. Check Ecuadorcentral.com and remember prices are neg. Good luck with your decision!

Ecuador: Phone Service:

We got Skype before we left the states and love it. Check it out before you move though, it is easier to set up from the states to get a number "from" the states. Hope that makes sence??

Ecuador: Where to find some things??:

Hello, My husband and I have been living in Tarqui for the last 6 weeks and we shop in Cuenca. We have been trying to find plane ordinary antihistamine for allergies. Does anyone know where I could get it or if it goes by a different name here? I also, would like to know if there are any butcher shops? I haven't been able to identify some of the cuts of meat.

Ecuador: Travel from Quito to Cuenca:

Hello, I would think after you explore the area around Quito that the safest way to get to Cuenca would be airplane. My husband and I and two dogs flew into Quito and had a van waiting for us to take us to Cuenca. If not for all the luggage and the dogs we would have flown. The van was new and we all fit BUT, it was a ride I would not take again! It was at night and the road is good but twists and turns. It usually is a 9 to 10 hour drive and this driver made it in about 6!! We wanted to kiss the ground when we got to Cuenca. It would be OK if you want to site-see but make sure your driver isn't a racer. When we ask him to slow down he did - for awhile! I haven't gone to Manta so can't help you there. Good Luck and have fun..... Kris

Ecuador Welcome Forum: Pet Quarantine:

Hello, we just flew here and had all the vet papers and the seal from the Ecuador Embassy in the states taped to the top of the crates and had no problem at Quito. We flew Delta non-stop and they let us take our dogs as baggage since they wouldn't have to transfer them. The people in Atlanta Delta were great. I called them ahead of time and let them know how much baggage we would have and the Giant crate we would have. (one was 90lbs and one over 100lbs) At Quito they looked at the papers and the official stamp and they were in! I recommend getting color copies to tape to the crates. They looked like the originals, but the originals were safe with my other papers. Good Luck to you.......

Ecuador: Finding a vet in Cuenca?:

Hello, My husband and I and two dogs have moved here to the Tarqui area just outside of Cuenca and our one dog is due for her yearly shots. Can anyone recommend a good vetenarian? Thanks, Kris

Ecuador: USA TV Networks:

Hi bentparrot, My husband found direct-pctv.com and gets to see US TV and serveral other channels. I think he paid 39.00 to sign up. If our broadband is "crowded" you get a stop and start program that is a pain but for the most part is better than nothing. We did buy a "Direct TV" system at the Coral and are having it installed Monday, we'll see what we get then. Later, Kris

Ecuador: rookie question:

jeffreb, check out ecuadorcentral.com they are in the Cuenca area and they have helped my husband and I with rental, visa, getting around, etc. Very nice people. Kris

Ecuador: Altitude sickness:

Hello all, in a week we will be landing in Quito and driving to Cuenca and are concerned about getting sick. I have heard some people get affected by the altitude and would like to know any herbal or over the counter things to help? Does the airport sell anything? Thanks, Kris
