Jamaica: :
Hello there,
Cant really comment on schools, however what I have found and this based on Oct 11 to Feb 12: all cost in JA dollars and per month - the light for a two bed house as well as two light on the lawn and patio all night approx on average $3500 ja, water $3200 per month, flow cable $3500, this is cable telly only as telephone and broadband not in my area at the moment, broadband and home phone $3200, gas for the cooker, thats the small bottle every 6 weeks $3000. Food shopping, two adults - this cost can vary - however I can do a shop on $5000 and less. I have 3 dogs also that we use meat scraps from the supermarket for $20 per lb and buy a sack of coarse cornmeal. We have a man in the market that sells items like washing up liquid, cooking oil and clothes softner by the bottle almost half the cost of supermarket. I have also found that my food portion size has decreased, just drink alot more!
Hope that's helped - in box me if you require more details. Good Luck!x
Jamaica: living and working in jamaica:
Dear All,
I am somewhat concerned about the information being provided and the almost disrespect for the host country - Jamaica that you might be hoping to live in, with your families that I think will also become victims of your basis, disregard and naivety.
Why on earth would you want to experience a country if you feel that their culture may "rub off" on you? Why do you think the way in which you communicate is the "right" way as apposed to your host country? Why not then remain in your insular little world and stop spreading your bigotted views!
Patois: a slang... The same way as you might have in the UK or the USA.
Social Workers do exist in Jamaica.
I think when using this mode of communication you "police" your own assumptions and values and be mindful not to spread to others that may take you literally!
Jamaica: Canadian looking for advice on Moving to Jamaica:
Hi Rolo,
Another way of sending funds is between your own two accounts. I transfer to from one to the other and physically withdraw the monies from the cash points in JA. I find that the costs are somewhat smaller that moneygram and western union. Hope thats clear...?
Jamaica: UK Citizen Moving to Jamaica - Work??:
I am moving to JA in two months and have been going back and forth for the last couple of years to see whats out there! In relation to employment, I have decided to work for myself and start a couple of small businesses (did I spell that right?) I think its about assessing the need and then trying to fulfil it! I will be in St Anns and I also have a one bed studio to let if anyone is interested? Would also like to network with those in moving - I think there is something about a shared experience and a lot of learning!

Jamaica: St Anns:
Hello Carse,
When are you planning to move? As for have you made the right decision, can I take it that you have been visiting the area of St Anns that you will be moving to? Think that is a big Yes then - I am moving there myself and previously I used to stay over the other side of the island- West-Mor-Land, I do prefer St Anns! I think its so cental! Near enough and just far enough from the Mont Bay airport. 15 Mins from Ochi and 1 1/2 hours from Kingston - I think thats got to be the best of both worlds! What are you real concerns - sometimes a issue shared is an issue halved!
Jamaica: Moving to Ja 2nd Nov 2011:
Hi Everyone, I will be moving to St Anns Bay on the 2nd November and have been going back and forth for the last year! Is there anything that I might have missed? Would like to have a network that I can communication with when I arrive - do not want to rely on my husbands. Would really like to hear from those that have moved... Some of the challenges as well as what is working really well!
