United Kingdom: I need help!!:

Cyntharella, In my view you certainly do need help if you are considering moving to the UK in the first place! Do you know that between 30% and one third of the adult population would like to find a way to leave the Island? England especially is too overcrowded, no room to move. Immigration policy is making matters worse. That is putting a strain on the health service; many hospitals cant cope and many General Practitioners are 'closing their books' to new patients. One I heard of recently gets a locum to fly in once a week to cover him, from Germany! More and more patients going into hospitals come out sicker than when they went in because of falling cleanliness standards and the rise of the superbug. Our health system used to be the envy of the world. Now people would rather go to India for treatment than take their chances here. Food is expensive, and a lot of that we are advised from time to time is unsafe to eat unless washed thoroughly and peeled, due to the nitrates we have poisoned our soil with over the years. You risk getting mad cow disease eating steak (I dont think they are quite certain yet about scrapie from mutton and lamb). We are told to be careful not to eat fresh salmon more than a couple of times per month. Cod stocks in our waters are so low fishermen are told not to go out. The salmonella scare in chickens and eggs is still in recent memory. Fuel is near £4 per gallon. Road Tax is one of the highest in Europe. Insurance premiums are high due to rising crime. The weather is awful. We are taxed until we squeak. Our Government are looking like a bunch of lying deceivers, with no effective opposition, so they can apparently get away with anything. This causes a lot of disenchanted electorate who, not knowing who to vote for, end up not bothering. Our education system is in a mess because ill informed and untrained politicians dabble in it as a hobby, and over the years, as a consequence, they have ruined what used to be the envy of the world. Now we have centres of the mundane where we used to have centres of excellance, because we cannot have passes and failures; only levels of success. Everyone passes in this country now; except we have overlooked the nurturing of the talented to create brilliance. The government use the police force to bring in revenues through setting up speed cameras all over the place, with instant fines. This has made criminals out of the majority of us who drive. Only they cant put you in prison for it. Thats not just because the prisons are squeaking at the seams because they are overflowing with inmates, but because it doesnt bring in any more revenue. In fact it costs money and they dont want that - cant afford it because of rising national debt. It also alienates the police from the normal law abiding citizen, who no longer provides the level of support they used to enjoy. A number of cities have no go areas where the police do not venture, even if there is a report of serious crime. The villains run things in those areas, and you dont go out at night, unless you run with them. Am I bitter about it all? Bet your life I am. Thats why I am packing up and leaving. Voting with my feet. I am not subscribing to this shambles any more. I am not a loser; I have been running my own business successfully for 20 years. Happily married with kids, who all want to leave too; a 20 year old, a 19 year old and a 10 year old. All singing with one voice. Isnt that extraordinary? Take some advice if you want to from me. If you are coming to the UK, head for Ireland or Scotland where there is still some semblance of good order and space to breathe. People can still actually be polite there, with a good sense of humour which seems to have been lost mainly through the depression and feeling of hopelessness which is building. There are going to be problems in England mainly through the upsurge of English Nationalism, which is growing. There is evidence of increasing polarisation between the 'local' and ethnic populations, who are creating their own ghettos. Troublemakers hide behind the protection that 'Political Correctness' affords them and the ordinary man in the street cannot say what is on his mind without being branded a racialist. Policemen are being told they will be sacked if they are found out to be members of particular political parties. Whats going on? Or you could come and find out for yourself; letting us know what you think. Bill

Cyprus: builder looking for work can you help?:

Hi Mark, Like yourselves, my wife and I decided a few months ago to relocate to Cyprus, and this we are doing on 1 September this year with our 10 year old daughter. We had many pre-conceived ideas about living there, until we visited for three weeks back in June to 'lay some foundations' in advance of our move. Just about every decision we had made got unmade for a huge variety of reasons, but better to change now than later when potentially a lot of costly mistakes may have been made. Its not that we didnt know the island - we know it very well (even in the north) but there is something to be said for visiting not as a holidaymaker, but as a future prospect. You do see things very differently, and its a good time to get yourself about and meet people who might be able to help either directly or through introduction. Put it this way, in our 3 weeks there, we got to the beach only once! We had a lot to do; schools, meet influential people, make new acquaintances (its good to think we are arriving amongt some new friends), job interviews, potential business meetings, interview lawyers (I met 5 before deciding which one to instruct). Then theres the big decision to make on property. Where to live? Rent or buy? I do not want to influence you in any way. But I would like to make the point very strongly that I believe you should get over there and live for a short period to help you address these questions. You begin to think of all these things differently; from a practical point of view and not as a holiday maker. For example, I used to think I wouldnt mind the drive from Pafos to Limassol every day, (it is a lovely drive I think), but I soon changed my mind after 2000 kilometers in 3 weeks doing just that! These boards are all very well for snippets of information, but it does not beat being there on the ground and doing it first hand. And surprisingly, it is a lot cheaper than holidaying there, because you dont tend to do all the holiday stuff (or drink as much!). Sorry to go on, but I imagine there will be others who may support me on this. Regards and good luck Bill Brown

Cyprus: Relocating Pet Dog:

I am sorry to contradict the previous respondent, but we are about to go to Cyprus as a permanent relocation, and the need for 6 months house quarantine has been removed, as long as your dog has a Pet Passport, and has been medically cleared for travel by your Vet within 48 hours of travel. This includes tick and lice treatment prior to travel. We had ours treated for rabies for good measure! Prior to travel. you need to apply to the Veterinary Services in Nicosia for a license to import the dog in the first place; then they send the vet down to port of embarkation to examine the poor pooch (and charge for that ) beore letting the poor thing into your hands. I am sure it is not a pleasant experience for the animal, but it is not for long, and of course you are charged upwards of £600 depending on the size of dog (ours is a westie) to get him there. Shop around for a quote to take him over though. I was quoted up to £947!!!!!! Thats the same for three of us to move over there! Cant believe it. Regards Bill

United Kingdom: housing in London:

Hi hkverde If you are a member of a Church Community, try making contact with a representative of that church in the locality you intend to live in. If a member of a service club (Lions etc) try using that as a source of help. If all that fails, call my clients, Warmans Property Management, based at Highbury Corner, North London, who may be able to find you something of value to you. Hope this helps Bill Brown

Cyprus: Relocating to Cyprus:

Carleen I with my wife and family are about to sell up and move to Cyprus after thinking about it long and hard over a two year period. Like you we are planning to take our pet dog with us and I can advise you as follows. Official quarantine regulations involve a house bound quarantine period of 6 months after arrival in Cyprus. If you write to the Cyprus High Commission, 93 Park Street, London, W1E 7ET, explaining that you want to take your pet out there, they will provide you with all the documentation you need, including a license application to import your pet

Cyprus: Northern Cyprus TRNC:

what are employment prospects like there for an accountant? My wife and I are planning to come out to live in Cyprus in the next two years. We would like to know more about the TRNC - we adore southern Cyprus and we are thinking we ought to visit and find out more about the north.

Cyprus: Moving to Cyprus:

Vivian, I have been trying to identify sources of information on registered companies operating in Cyprus with the purpose being to contact them to discover what my employment prospects are like. I am a 46 year old accountant and have worked for myself for the last 18 years or so. I have managed to gather a huge amount of information from the Cyprus stock exchange and have already been in contact with a couple of hundred companies, but I feel I need to seek more. Is there a register of some sort I could subscribe to? There doesnt appear to be such a thing as Chambers of Commerce. I could change direction and get involved in something different like plumbing or electrical work or even become an IFA! Any openings? I could consider remaining self employed of course, but without contacts of any sort I think that would be a real uphill struggle. Any help would be very welcome. Thanks a million, Bill Brown (bill@cba-ltd.demon.co.uk)
