Panama: Apple iPhone coverage:

Last year when my wife & I visited, we went to a local cell phone store in Penonome (I don't recall the name of the store) and bought SIM cards to put in our iPhones. We got local numbers and never "lost" our US number. Just take the SIM card out when you return to the states.

Panama: Firearms:

Jazzman, Very well put! As I've always believed, an armed society is a polite society!

Panama: my two cents on panama retirement:

#1 is all too true. All of my in-laws never leave their homes unattended for more than a few hours. If they go to the city, they always leave someone behind to watch the house so the neighbors don't steal everything that isn't nailed down - including the chickens!

Panama: Recommendations of which areas to check for Expat living:

panamalady - Excellent observations on ADM vs EV. Those are some of the exact reasons we will not be moving to ADM. EV is at the top of a very short list for us.

Panama: Fishing in panama:

Panama: no democracy in panama:

When I was stationed in Panama in the early 90's my (now) ex-wife bought a VW bug from a local. He gave her a written list of all of the repairs performed on the vehicle prior to her purchase of the vehicle. Once she got it home, it started to have some mechanical issues and she took it to a mechanic. Yes, I know, she should have done that prior to the purchase, but she trusted the guy - what can I say. Anyway, the mechanic told her that basically the car was a piece of junk and she should try and get her money back. None of the listed "repairs" had been made and the engine had only been repainted to appear new. She hired a lawyer and filed a court case. She eventually (after many months) "won" the case but the guy never paid her the money she was awarded in the case. She went back to her lawyer and he told her good luck on getting the money back. The bottom line was even though she won the case, there was no legal mechanism in place to actually make the guy pay. The only guy that made any money was her lawyer. Maybe things have changed since then (doubtful) but how can they actually make you pay your neighbor?

Panama: A little Help for Upcoming Trip Needed:

If your phone has a SIM card, just remove your current SIM card and purchase one from a carrier in Panama. We just got back from a two-week trip and that's what I did. The card was about $8 and I bought a $20 pre-paid data/calling card to use while we were there. Also, if you already have a GPS, there is an excellent Panam GPS program you can purchase and download to your Garmin GPS unit. It saved my butt several times in the city and it's well worth the money. PTY-GPS is the company. Link: http://www.panama-zone.com/ There are two competing companies offering the map and each one accuses the other of stealing their map. I don't know who stole from who, but PTY-GPS is the company I bought from and the map works like a champ!

Panama: Power outage at Tocumen Airport last night:

I remember seeing Noriega board his LAST flight from Howard AFB! He had a couple of fellows helping him walk up the ramp of the C-130... :)

Panama: Need Advice: Crazy Road trip up Pacific coast down other.:

We just returned from a 2 week vacation. I always use Thrifty for my vehicle rentals & I always book online. The mandatory local insurance is definitely a "gotcha" that they will not budge on. We always get a small SUV - I believe this last one was a RAV4. Nice little vehicle and got decent gas mileage. I used my phone and took several photos and a video of the entire vehicle (inside and out) showing all damage/vehicle condition prior to leaving the airport. It came in very handy when I returned it!
