Advice for New Expats

Take the time to decide what you really want to bring because shipping can be pricey. You can compare prices at www.courts.com.jm or www.singer.com.jm both stores carry most household goods and when you factor in packing,shipping,duty,taxes and insurance, then paying a driver and truck to pick up in Kingston harbour authority it's cheaper sometimes to buy when you get to Jamaica. Its also good for the local economy. I brought my bread machine and karoake and cds because I didn't find them for sale anywhere.

I also checked The Observer and Sense Jamaica its a buy tradesell website.also if you check kijiji .ca cuz there's alot of jamaicans living here in canada and they use kijiji to post their rentals back home in jamaica becuz it's free...Where in St Catherines do u want to live exactly?

Jamaica: To ship or not to ship?:

I'm moving to StElizabeth. I'm sending no more than 20 boxes and my 50" TV in a shipping crate by way of sea. Does anyone have any advice about what to pack and send to Jamaica? This is in reference to household goods. Are any items in particular hard to find or very expensive in Jamaica? Thanks for all the feedback

How about getting into the country as a volunteer? At least you would be inside the country and maybe would be easier to get permananet resisdency. British Columbia is the most expensive province to live in! Ever thought of Ontario? The Metro Toronto are offers corporate offices such as IBM, Microsoft and big insurance companies like Sunlife Financial there woud be many tech jobs for youe husband. Also for you there are many large hospitals,rehab,nursing and convalescent homes around the area. Pearson Airport,the Harbourfront,and N Tower are major draws for people. Also there's loads of available housing in every price range. I'm from Cambridge Ontario. Google Toronto,Vancouver and area to compare them. Hope this helps....best wishes with everything. Angie

where do you live currently? I'm moving to St.Elizabeth in March 2012 but have shipped numerous items for my house. i'm from Ontario Canada. I have done alot of research as far as shopping,health care,movies,cars you name it ive checked it out!. I've been back and forth for 12 years and have found that websites are so helpful. I am Jamaican is a great website too. I think I'm going to miss the deli counter though..Thank goodness for intranet and cells...
