South Africa: Residency?:
Does anyone know how long you can stay in SA before becoming resident for tax purposes, and whether there are any exchange control restrictions on non-resident bringing in and taking out funds? I have a business there but am non-resident, and may have to come to SA to sort out problems together with some cash to pay for them.
South Africa: How safe is it?:
The gov't has recently published some stats on crime. How accurate? who knows? but they seem to be sayin they have curbed it but don't know how to improve on things dramatically. The Cape is probably safer, with little towns like Greyton being even safer. Steer clear of the big cities; CT, Jo'burg, Durban. It's not as bad as some make out.
Cyprus: HELP!!!! Need information on moving to Cyprus:
I am not sure that being Greek will mean you are automatically entitled to become a resident. However, I know UK citizens just need to come over and apply for a 'pink slip'. This is a temporary permit to reside in Cyprus, but does not mean you can work here. For that I believe you need to set up a company and be self employed. You will need to show that you have sufficient means to support yourself, so you will need to open a bank account in Cyprus and deposit funds there. I use a local person to arrange all my affaires, and he is reasonably priced.
Good luck

Cyprus: moving to cyprus:
Hi
My best advise is seek professional advise. There seems to be a lack of printed material on these matters, and advise from locals needs to be confirmed. Tax is 5% on what you remit so keep all your dosh offshore. If you are buying you will need to furnish it yourself. House prices are getting high here. Paphis may still be slightly cheaper. Peyia is nice, but the nicest area is around Tala, where you can find an expat rural estate, with villas and mature gardens and relatively unspoilt. For rental, try the Cyprus weekly. Satellite is illegal here, but you can buy all the bits an peices, and subscribe via an offshore entity. Get quotes, better still talk to expats when you arrive. The greek satellite is called Nova, probably the cheapest.
Best of luck

Cyprus: UK expats in Cyprus - contact wanted:
Hi
I moved to Cyprus with my wife on a temporary basis. However, we now need to stay a little longer than originally planned. We came over, had a look first at areas and properties to rent. I have been contemplating working here as the cost of living is spiralling, as a web/graphic designer. New legislation means that EU citizens can now work in Cyprus. What you have to be careful about is residency status, and allowances like car tax. It is best to go to someone who can give you the complete low down, and who preferably will organise everything for you. Customs is mine field here for the unwary as we recenty learnt to our cost.
Best of luck
Victor

Cyprus: Information on moving to Cyprus from the UK:
I have been living in Cyprus for over a year, moving from London. It is now possible to work in Cyprus, and I am looking into that possibility myself as the cost of living here is going up. I think the basis of the possibility is to set up a company and become self employed. I haven't seen a lot of evidence of this happening yet, but have seen adverts offering help in this area. I will be looking at becoming self -employed in Web and Graphic Design. I already have a site and will be well placed to help small businesses in Cyprus with marketing material and a web presence. If you get a chance have, a look at my web site at http://www.geocities.com/vsaumarez
Please let me know if I can help in any other way.
