Advice for New Expats

1) Do atleast 8 months to 1 year year advanced planning. 2) Ensure you have advanced detailed dialogue with the Jamaican agent of the forwarder packing & shipping your items. 3) Request detailed original & destination quotes from multiple forwarders and their destination agents. 4) If possible request off-loading, unpacking, placement of items in home and the removal of all packing material as an added service. This will eliminate Insurance Hic-ups while ensuring & maintaining privacy of your move from local area folks who usually gather around to help with the offloading for smaller fees.

2 Bedroom 2 Bathroom Recently Re-Furnished is available at Worthington Ct in New Kingston for us$1100.00 per month, 2 Mths Deposit is required Washer & Dryer Included....What Date Required?

I doubt American Shopper is marking up the customs duties so in essence the only charges you can cut from your expenses are their administrative fees. My suggestion is to align yourself with a reputable freight forwarding company in the US, order your items online and have them deliver to the forwarders address with instructions to ship directly to you in Jamaica. On arrival in Jamaica you'll be required to go to the port and do the clearance yourself. Be mindful thou, you might go back to American Shopper. Be careful and alert

Your best shot will be Kingston Logistics Centre -KLC, this is a facility operated by ZIM Lines...the final selling price will be determined by the cntr grade. You will be responsible for custom duties and haulage costs

Jamaica: shipping goods:

Hi Karen, much more information is required before your questioned can be answered properly, eg your country and city? the type of move- FCL or LCL? (Full Cntr Load or Less than Cntr Load). Type & volume of cargo being shipped? lastly. will you require wrapping and packaging? Provide this and I'll be able to narrow down your costs until an actual survey can be arranged.

Jamaica: Moving to JA with Non-Jamaican Spouse:

As a Jamaica national traveling home you are entitled to a US$500.00 duty free concession per trip on barrels containing food item, misc grocery items and your PE (clothes) this 500.00 will only cover 3 Barrels. The rest you'll be required to pay a flat rate of duties (JMD6,500.00 ) per barrel. There are no ceilings on the quantity you can ship with the description I provided above. Pls bear in mind electrical appliances are not included so full duties will be applicable on any shipped.

Jamaica: Potential move to Jamaica:

Hi There, a realistic amount of money will be relative to what you have in mind. What would you be planning on taking with you? a Fridge, a Stove, TV, etc. or a 1 x 20' Cntr.?. One thing I can tell you from a customs perspective you will only get duty exemptions if you are brought in by a company, meaning you have a contracted Job Letter, work permit etc and a Letter detailing your employment. If not be prepared to pay duties that will be based on values applied by the Customs officer who does the inspection at the port of entry. I just completed a 1 x 20' for an American Expatriate who has her Certs in Physical Therapy got her work permits and she paid US$1054.00 in duties I think the officer really showed her due consideration to her efforts to re-locate and was very lenient, I say this because her site inspection notes actually spoke to over US$2500.00 although not everything valued

Jamaica: Family Relocating with Kids to Work in Kingston - Help?:

AISK Kingston is by far the best, all my kids were pulled from the local traditional schools for AISK and I have only 1 regret. All their friends were expat kids and just like them they migrated and hardly wants to return to Jamaica that I refuse to leave. Its such a wonderful place. Just like every other country there is crime, I know of it but have never experience it. Just like NY where I'm from its there but Ive never experience it.. As a matter of fact I have never heard of any crime associated with expats. I'm a custom broker and I deal with diplomats and expats on a daily basis, honestly this is their prime concern when coming in, however most (95%) have a different view when it's time to leave which in itself becomes a difficult task . The warmth and easy going life is unbelievable. Health Care to me is the biggest nightmare, I still head home for everything.

Jamaica: Beauty Salon Experience:

This is a great and jovial Jamaican story, I've read it to quite a few of my friends. Hush the only rude or derogatory word used was "gal" and I"m quite sure no pun was intended. All you got was a real good dose of country culture jamaican style. They thought you weren't understanding a word they were saying. You should have said something and watch them all go quiet. Once when I was younger and traveling the world, my friend and I visited Panama and was having a few beers at an open bar. After a few, one friend Lance started mouthing off another patron sitting across from us in patois, saying how yu so ugly buoy, yu mada musi di luv Pickney fi mek all yu grow up, plus others derogatory things......shortly after the 6 footer came around and held little short Lance slapped him twice and said "who di blood-claut yu a talk buoy. I have never heard a farth so loud again in all my life Trust me they meant nothing, it was fun reading your post
