Dominican Republic: Seeking Advice about life in DR:

I lived in Luperon for several years I loved it still visit it must of been How Hemingway lived in Cuba 100 years ago, lots of boating even boat building, great bunch of boaters who r swalling the anchor and moving ashore, even the great Bruice Van Saint (not dead yet) loves it and returns often, it will make a place in ur heart steve in dr

Dominican Republic: The Do's and the Do Not's for expats in DR:

I found NY and Miami lots more dagerous, but i guess it depends were u hang out and what ur habits are. If u walk the streets at 2 am in NY, Miami or any large city watch out. I have lived here for 8 years and have had no roberies. but I don't hang out in bars or crack houses and i live in a nice neighborhood. I try to surround myself with bright motivated people. My night life is with my familey. steve in dr

Dominican Republic: Idea of living costs etc.:

I am an expat living in Santiago, Here I rented a compound, 2 houses with a pool for 1000 US when I moved they raised the price to 1500 us, I send my kids (5, 14) to private school. My son 14 I pay 7000 us a year. My doughter goes to another school for 2000 a year. There r a lot cheaper schools but education is important to me. When u fly in come visit us in Santiago. (s@bahr.ws) I picked Santiago because it is not a tourest town. It cost me 60% of what I spent in the US in the Miami area. reseacher steve

Dominican Republic: health insurance:

Yes I bought health insurance at age 58. I have used it very little for me but the wife takes the kids all the time. My little one broke her leg she was taken to HOMS in Santiago. Dr. Cruz spoke english and was a fine dr. I woked in the emergency medical field in Miami for 30 some years, I think (my wife pays) we pay around 120 dollars a month. Humano royal plan 809 4763535 or 809 200-4903 is the Insurance company steve in dr

Dominican Republic: Bank Accounts in DR:

Yes bring ur banking checks from the US and open an account with a check. It will take 30 days or more to clear (they like to live off the interest they collect while u wait) your check will clear from ur US bank in 2-3 days. I keep enough money in my savings here in the dr (u pay monthly for checking don't bother no one takes checks here). for emergencys only. If u bank more then 10,000 US u have to file yearly and report the maximum amount u had that tax year seperate FFBAR form. also u can cash checks and the local money changers once they know u. Dominican Republic: Dominican News.:

Yes the electrical grid in Luperon is uneliable. Lack of power is bad for the tourist business no ice for their drinks and no ac at night after a long day at the beach. With 8 solar pannels and 8 batteries 96% of the time the sun supplies me electric. The gov run electric company cannot supply electricity 50% of the time. Thanks mister Sun!! Lets not look to any gov for any services they will be exprnsive and the services are of poor quality that includes US medical services. Happy expat living off the grid with wife and kids.

Dominican Republic: Sending kids to local schools?:

I am retired and live in the Santiago area. I have 2 children 6, 14. I send them to private school and they are doing great. I find the country a relaxed atmosphere to raise children. I monitor who and were they go. they are great kids and soon I hope to have my son go to the colledge here to study medicine. good luck on ur adventure. steve

Dominican Republic: Is it really so bad??:

I live in Santiago area, Camp david. I have lived in Santiago for 3 years with no events. I lived in a boating comunity in Luperon for another 5 years with no events. Life is safe here if you watch were u go and when, I did the same when I lived in Miami. A nice city but it can be dangerous at night in the wrong areas. I live a family life and I am usually at home before dark and up at 5 AM getting the kids ready for school. Private schools can be expensive here not like the US but the cost range in the $3000 US to $8000 a year for kids in the Santiago area. the people r friendly but will tell u what u want to hear, not the truth. gov is slow electric is off a lot for repair or black outs in the poorer areas to save fuel. Poor areas don't pay there bills. Water is good in most areas in Santiago, I n Luperon the water has been off for 3 years, they shut the tourist hotel down and the water also. Common areas by definition r areas that belong to everyone but no one cleans, repair, fixes. Look at the condition of most condos and u will see what I mean. Earthquakes are common here. Small and mostly unintursive. Many things are available here at La sirrena (wal-mart). there r some better stores Bravo, and National. There are a few low paying jobs for foreigners if u will work for $100 a week. Medical situation is good here u can buy health insurance if your 60 years or younger for about $60 a month or less. Family coverage is available and cheap. My brother in Miami pays $19,000 a year for family coverage. Medical doctors are vary similar to US doctors, the help maintain ur Diseases. Alopathic drs. The food is fresher and more healthy her in the dr, most of my friends lose weight in the first year and keep it off. HOMS is the new hospital, my wife and child both had operations that were successful. Come visit you will love it, a lot of foreigners get tired of the 3rd world living in 10 or less years. they get bored!! by for now steve in dr
